Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

Geocacher of the Month Geocoin

Groundspeak needs your help acknowledging a geocacher each month that stands out by inspiring other geocachers with their innovation, creative hides and/or logs, respect for the environment, and helpfulness. More than a hundred geocachers submitted outstanding nominees from around the world.

The Geocacher of the Month celebrates geocachers for their contributions.  A panel of Lackeys had the difficult task of selecting four of the most outstanding nominees. You can help name one of these nominees the “Geocacher of the Month.”

Each geocacher you see below displays extraordinary geocaching qualities including generosity and  inventiveness. Write a comment on this blog post about which of these three geocachers you’d like to see as the first “Geocacher of the Month.”  All those not awarded or nominated are encouraged to submit nominations again next month.

Read the testimonials below and leave a comment with your suggestion. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

haksu10

(Member since 2006)

haksu10

Nominated by ZeroOne: “When I read about your Geocacher of the Month project, I naturally started thinking who would be the most suitable Finnish cacher for the nomination. It took me a while because the person is so humble, but when it came to me it was obvious: username haksu10.

Haksu10 is extremely devoted to the Finnish geocaching community — I dare to say there’s no one more devoted than him. He has single-handedly created and is constantly developing the geocache.fi site, used by most Finnish geocachers daily.

I don’t know when, but in the middle of maintaining the site haksu10 also seems to find the time to occasionally go geocaching. Last summer it almost cost him his life, though. He was bitten by a poisonous snake and was hospitalized. Luckily he recovered in a few days and was back developing the site. Haksu has already found almost 2000 caches and owns almost a hundred caches. The most special of his caches is probably GC16QCH Haksulandia.. What makes it special, though, is that it is located at haksu10’s yard. According to the description, the cache is equipped with an electric outlet in case you need to charge anything. Call before you arrive (or just ring the doorbell) and haksu10 will make you some coffee.”

Dale & Barb

(Members since 2006)

Dale n Barb

Nominated by Joshism: “I am nominating  ‘Dale n Barb.’ Dale and Barbara have been very active in geocaching for several years.  They have organized or assisted in numerous events with both their Space Coast Geocaching Association and the larger Florida Geocaching Association.  I live more than hour’s drive away, but still attend their events; I know many more who drive even farther.  They have worked with parks and the geocaching community, including numerous CITO events.  They are the owners of “A Cool Cache” (GC15RQB): the most Favorited non-Virtual in the state of Florida. They encourage others to “Take Pride In Your Hide” and live that motto, with thoughtful well-maintained hides that have never disappointed me.  They are a huge asset to the Florida geocaching community in every way possible.”

De broekies

(Member since 2006)

De broekies

Nominated by kdv, Marcel en Micha (and two others).

kdv writes, “I would like to nominate “De broekies.”  They are spending most of their spare time helping the Dutch (and international) geocaching community enjoy their geocaching experiences even more. They run a successful geocaching website (www.globalcaching.eu) and offer a lot of functionality and fun to all its users and guests.

They often give away Geocoins and other stuff to visitors. Plus they often help out other websites too, hosting items that require special technical knowledge, for instance to run a Geocoin race. And I have never even met him in person!  Robert is just a great person, and I can honestly not think of anyone more deserving of this title. Actually, Geocacher of the Decade would be even more appropriate!

Marcel en Micha writes,”With this email I would like to nominate Robert of the Broekies for Geocacher of the Month. The reason I would like to nominate him is for his outstanding commitment to the Dutch geocaching community.  I think he is a good example of how to make the geocaching community a better place. Every country in the world should have a ‘Robert’.”

Geocoin front and back

A panel of Lackeys will use your comments to help decide the Geocacher of the Month award on August 20, 2011 at the Geocaching Block Party in Seattle, Washington, USA. Each Geocacher of the Month will receive an exclusive special edition ”Geocacher of the Month” Geocoin along with a Geocacher of the Month hat and certificate acknowledging their contributions signed by the founders of Geocaching.com: Jeremy Irish, Bryan Roth and Elias Alvord.

If you know an outstanding geocacher who should be the Geocachers of the Month, send an email to geocacherofthemonth@groundspeak.com.

Every nomination must meet the following requirements. Please include your name, the name of your nominee, their username, at least one picture of the nominee and description (in 500 or fewer words) explaining why he or she deserves to be the Geocacher of the Month. Please inform your nominee that you’ve submitted them for the award. Nominations for the September Geocacher of the Month must be received by September 3rd.

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

  • Lizardsally

I vote for Dale n Barb.  One thing that really gets to me is cache owners who don’t maintain their hides.  Not only do D&B maintain their hides, they educate newbie cachers about the need to do so!

  • Kipittäjä

Kipittäjä votes for Haksu10.  His caches are soooo great fun. It is not always the fun of seeking (some are also easy to find, thaks for that too) but always a pleasure to found! You will never know what happens when you open Hakusumade box… :D those sounds, visualisation, surprised technics that makes you scared for a while and laughing the next moment. Some have nice smell effects… anything.. you name it, Haksu made it.

  • gatorman83

You know, if you read some of the posts below about Dale and Barb, there is not much more anyone can add about their contributions. The events they have held for central Florida cachers have been fantastic – CITOs, holiday events, meet n greets, benefit for ill friends, flash mob events. You get the point, they are very active in the geocaching community. Well, I’m not going to go on and on here, read the other posts. My vote is wholeheartedly for Dale and Barb.

  • Geo

I am not very fond of these kind of “employee of the month” style contests but without any doubt Haksu10’s dedication to the caching and his work for caching community is something so special that you can not forget him.

  • Kimmo & Emil

    My vote goes to Haksu10!

  • Jrcbec

If I had to think about who should be geocacher of the month….Dale n Barb certainly come to mind….we attended their spacecoast community celebration and got to witness a first-rate organization overseen by these two devoted cachers….It was inspiring to watch the support given to their community….Each member was celebrated in an unselfish manner…thanks for giving me the opportunity to make our opinion known…jrcbec (john & Beth)

  • Eastwoods

Haksu10 is my vote also. Without his work my caching would be so much harder!

  • Viltsu

My vote goes to Haksu10 as he has set the standards what a geocaching page could and should look like. Groundspeak should go and see, and learn. Haksu’s page is also a reason why many finnish cachers do have premium membership on groundspeak’s servive, as it is required to get full benefits.

  • Legsa^

haksu10 . If there was no haksu, Finnish cachers wont have thein Finnish caching-site.

  • TeamShortStuff

Dale and Barb, 100%. They are the most amazing people you will ever meet, and no one who meets them forgets them! The SCGA store is known all across the country as one of the best resources for cachers, but the events that Dale and Barb throw really take the cake. CITOs, benefits, how to’s… you name it they do it! We love Dale and Barb!

  • Captain Morgan

I vote also for Haksu10, he has done so huge work up here in north for geocachers of Finland! In addition to that he is amazingly creative, he makes excellent, really creative caches. Groundspeak staff knows some of those caches, they found them while visiting here few years ago.

  • Captain Morgan

And three more votes for Haksu10, from both of my sons and and my wife!

  • Jaumau

    I vote for Haksu10.

  • JLillia

    One vote for Haksu10!

  • Geovius

Two more votes for haksu10 from us.
Finnish caching scene would be totally different without him!

  • http://www.facebook.com/KatieGuzman Katie Guzman

    I vote Dale & Barb….Cache On!

  • Geonovice sikajack

    Haksu10 definitely!

  • Tporter

Dale & Barb have been a huge factor in making GeoCaching in Florida as great as it has become.
    Vote for D&B
Thanks D&B for all that you have and will continue to do.

  • ihmiskoira kuono kohteessa

    Vote for Haksu10!

  • Terhi Salo

I also vote for Haksu10, his caches were the reason I so totally fell in love with geocaching.

  • weellu

Definately haksu10. I think his has enabled many to join this noble hobby as his website is so easy to use. His caches are also very creative and innovative. Never seen caches like that even when abroad.

  • JasoX

I vote also for Haksu10, he has done so huge work up here in north for geocachers of Finland!

  • Palikka1

    I vote for Haksu10.

  • Leeruska

    I vote for Haksu10!

  • Imtomcat

I would like to take a moment to tell the community, no the world about the fabulous duo of Dale N Barb. Their cache “A Cool Cache” was a find within my first ten finds and I could not have been more fortunate to have found not only this cache but also Dale N Barb. Barb came out when she saw me and we spent the next two hours talking about Geocaching. She was so welcoming that Wifey and I attended their first geoversary event the following weekend. I have learned since then that I was not treated any differently than any other cacher who comes into their presence. In the last three years that I have know them I have gotten to see a lot of what they do for the sport and the community. As mentioned in the nomination, D N B are such an active part of the community hosting so many CITO events that Brevard County Parks actually invites them and our group SCGA to their parks to host CITO events in exchange for the use of their parks. They have made such an impact on the communities parks that they have received recognition on a permanent posting on one of the island parks which through their efforts is now open to the public.
As we live in a very highly visited travel destination, we have many cachers come from all around the world to visit the area. As a wonderful way to make everyone welcome, DNB have also hosted numerous virtually spontaneous events to introduce these cachers to our community. I do not know of a cacher who has come to our area to visit who has said they would like to meet some of the local cachers that DNB have not hosted an event for. And all the while they try to remain very low key and not accept any of the recognition they so rightly deserve. They have made geocaching not just something to do while you are visiting Florida, but a reason to come to Florida. They have also held amazing events to assist some in the community who needed the love, help and compassion of their fellow geocachers. They are truly the embodiment of all that geocaching should be and they are definitely the standard by which other cachers should be measured. I do not know any other cachers who have ever had the honor of meeting Dale N Barb who have not been touched by them in some way. As a matter of fact  they were recognized by a large group of local cachers, their peers, a little over a year ago with a plaque which hangs in their shop (and is trackable) for all that they have done for the sport. I believe they are definitely deserving of the very first Geocacher Of The Month Award and also the Geocacher Of The Year Award when it comes out.
Believe me when I tell you this is a very short explanation of why I feel they are more than deserving, but Wifey told me no to drive you crazy by writing a book. Thanks for letting me tell you a little about them and please make a trip to the Space Coast of Florida to meet them, you will not be disappointed.

  • thelanes (Orlando FL)

My vote is for Dale and Barb.
I have known Dale and Barb for about 4 years, and they always seem to want to contribute to geocaching whenever they can by either hosting events to introduce new comers to other cachers or just place good worthy caches, be either ammo cans or micros.  They help others host events or provide good advice for cachers hosting their first events.

Haksu10 has given us Finnish geocachers a virtual community that has promoted geocaching in Finland more than even Groundspeak itself. He has given us tools to use which help us expand and refine our geocaching experience, and he is tireless in his efforts to improve and help. And that is just the virtual part of his help and dedication.

I’m not going to repeat more of what has been said before, so in short:
    I’m voting for Haksu10.

  • sutta

This one is easy, Haksu10 absolutely!

  • Kissankello

I vote for Haksu10 because of his hard and unselfish work has made Geocaching possible for those people whose skills in English language are weak or they don’t understand it at all.

  • Klyyvari

Because I am not good in English language I have quoted “Geo”s comment:

I am not very fond of these kind of “employee of the month” style contests but without any doubt Haksu10’s dedication to the caching and his work for caching community is something so special that you can not forget him.
