November Featured Geocacher of the Month Nominees – Add Your Comments

October Featured Geocacher of the Month, coast2coast2coast

Every month the geocaching community nominates people to be the  Geocacher of the Month – a geocacher who positively contributes to the community and stands out for his or her outstanding involvement in the activity. Groundspeak Lackeys choose three of the nominees and tell their stories here on Latitude 47. The community selects which of the three should be designated “Geocacher of the Month.”

Last month, geocachers awarded the honor to coast2coast2coast. More than 50 geocachers wrote in support of the winner. Coast2coast2coast has hosted multiple events, helped direct the Mid Island Geocaching organization, and is known for his dedication to the geocaching community. Congratulations to all those who were nominated in October.

Now it’s your turn to help select the featured November “Geocacher of the Month.” The nomination period is closed and we have whittled it down to the three geocachers featured below.

_JohnnyCache

Nomination by Bocco:

_JohnnyCache has volunteered countless hours of his time as the president of the Maryland Geocaching Society for the past two years. In that position Tom has worked tirelessly to promote geocaching in our state. He also provides links for helpful information, and detailed instructions on how to use various GPSr’s, software, etc., in our organization forums. He has created a Maryland Geocaching Society fanpage on facebook, and a smartphone app for our forums. _JohnnyCache is not only an enthusiastic geocacher in his own right, who has hidden some of the most devious cache hides in the state, he gives back to our community of cachers. His efforts as president of our society have enhanced geocaching in Maryland enormously.”

Nomination by 2oddHOGs:

“Rod spends a lot of time helping new cachers learn everything from the basics of geocaching to more intricate hides. When I first met Rod, he was giving a talk at a small town library. Rod is enthusiastic and thinks nothing of going over to a person’s home to help them with a computer problem or to take them out to find their first cache.  Rod was instrumental in setting up the first ever geocaching training ground, on a city owned recreational island, that will stay a training ground even now that the training event happened (close to 100 people attended).  Rod spent a lot of time working to make a contact with the city, showing them what he planned for the  island and getting the city’s support to hold the event and keep the island as the training ground. Rod is a terrific role model for those of us that are new the the game. ”

Nomination by Mickelic:

“Nicole is a geography teacher who uses geocaching to teach her students about latitude and longitude. She just wrote a grant for new GPS devices for her students and was awarded $500. Those who awarded the grant thought that her grant was the most unique and they featured Nichole in their monthly newsletter. I believe that she should be up for a nomination because, due to her excitement for geocaching, all of her students love going on field trips geocaching in our area. There is so much more about NicGeo which makes her the cacher of the month.”

Comment below to tell us who you think should be the featured November “Geocacher of the Month.” A panel of Lackeys will use your comments to help decide which geocacher is awarded the honor. • Scorfman

My vote goes out to _JohnnyCache. Yeah, he’s a Steellers fan I know, but all he does for geocaching and beyond makes up for that.

  • Tomlovesbacon

I have to vote for_JohnnyCache besides having a great name, he has had some great hides as well. Even thought I have never meet the man I feel that I already know him.

  • Fontyfamily

    Rokman4 get my vote

Reading all the students say such great things about how nicgeo has really made learning fun. All these young ppl enjoying the fun of geocaching. NicGeo for November!!

  • Autumn GRJB

My vote is for Nicgeo. I love hearing about het geocaching adventures.

  • Hamilton JIvy

I am voting for NicGeo. She makes learning fun. Her knowledge about this sport makes great new clever hides from her students possible around the area. I have enjoyed hunting these hides. NicGeo 4 Nov.

  • Schindigger

Rod first introduced me to geocaching in 2008.  We have been lifelong Buds and I got to experience many great things with him over the years, Geocaching has been by far the most exciting.  He turns into that 12 year old kid again and it is contagious.  I nominate Rod because I know he brings the kid out in all who he meets.

  • Jack The Snake

What can I say about my Bro?  I had better be nice.  Seriously, he and I have geocached and gone to many unique places because of this sport.  As our bud Schindigger said, he brings the kid out in you and that was evident when the three of us found Rod’s 1000th cache in Vancouver, BC’s oldest cache.  I remember his excitement in finding this and his appreciation to the geocaching community for maintaining it.  I also have seen and heard about how many people he has helped with thier gps units and how to make caching fun.  I believe he deserves to be geocacher of the month.

  • T Verhulst

Wow, I just found out about this award for Rod and I am impressed with all three of the nominees.  Rod did a good job creating the island geo park and that is one more of his many contributions to this activity.  My vote is for the rokman.

  • Gunsmithpete

Rod and I have been friends since the 70’s.  We have participated in many things together, camping, hiking, cruising and now geocaching.  He taught me about geocaching a few years back.  I am not as active as he is due to my job constraints, however, because he introduced me to this sport, I have found new and exciting places to explore in and around my hometown.  I would like this to be a nomination for him to receive Geocacher of the Month.  Thanks Rod!

  • Autumn GRJB

I would like to vote for NicGeo, she has taught many students the fun sport of geocaching.

  • Amber

How many times can we vote? NicGeo’s students would be so proud of their teacher if she wins. She has introduced all of them the sport of geocaching, and many of them have really got a knack for very clever hides. NicGeo

Voting once person person works perfect. We’ll close voting on the 21st and look at the comments, tally the votes and decide on 23rd. Such a tough choice. Each person nominated is an outstanding geocacher and person.

  • GG82

I vote for Rokman4 for geocacher of the month.    I just finished doing the Mac. Park geocaching training ground and it is a great area for a new cacher to learn from.  There is a variety of caches, some hard some easy and some very different  – a wonderful way to learn about geocaching in one area.   Great job Rod for organizing these caches and making it a fun place to learn.

  • Calvertcachers

    We vote for JohnnyCache!
Tom has been instrumental in advancing geocaching in the mid-Atlantic and he has devoted countless hours to teaching geocaching to youth groups, community orgs, and he has worked hard to advance geocaching in our region.  For the past two years he has also served as the President of the Maryland Geocaching Society and he has done an outstanding job.

Such a tough playing field!!  A vote for _johnnycache for making MD a good place to move to, and providing interesting caches to hunt!

  • sircurly

    _JohnnyCache has my vote!

  • Filster27

I vote for Rod, alias Rokman4. He’s never too busy to help out new cachers. He has always been very enthuastic about the geocaching hobby and it manifests in his innovative caches and his tireless efforts in the local geocaching community. He was instrumental in the geocaching event for new cachers in Mac park.

  • Donmcvicar

I vote for Rokman 4. He did a great job with a novice cachers’ event this month, adding to an impressive batch of creative caches he has done in the past.

  • sandbar54

We vote for Rod (rokman4). As newbies he selflessly gave up his time to help start us off and answer our many questions, fix our gps and computers.  No request is too difficult. He was instrumental in establishing Mac Park training ground for many to access.  All done with a smile and a twinkle in his eye….Thanks for all your help.

  • Womantracker

Rokman4 all the way!!!!!…  his enthusiam for the game/sport is contagious.  A very knowledgeable and informative fellow who has an infectious personality who gives up alot of his time to help the newbies to make sure they cache safely.  When I was new to the game he took the time to fill me in on what to carry in my backpack while caching.  I used all of his suggestions…  I even went a got a “spot”.  I love the devious nature of some of the caches he has made/hidden.

  • Mr. J

voting for _JohnnyCache He has made geocaching in MD famous!
