May’s featured nominees have climbed mountains and crossed borders to bring awareness to their favorite hobby. These brave, enthusiastic, and adventurous explorers may reside in different parts of the world, but they all share a love of geocaching.

Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as May’s Featured “Geocacher of the Month.”

Milosheart - April 2012 Featured Geocacher of the Month

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these three geocachers you feel should be crowned.

Last month, Milosheart was chosen as the April Featured Geocacher of the Month. Milosheart was recognized for their ability to organize numerous geocaching gatherings, their hospitality, and for the success of geocaching in their community.

Here are your nominees for the May Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

iphone.cachers

According to Team Monkeyboy, “when it comes to bravery and a sense of adventure, one husband and wife team definitely fit the bill; the iphone.cachers  from Galena, Ohio.” Michael and Angela “will drive hundreds of miles for the sole purpose of grabbing a single leg of a Multi-State geocache, or defy a blazing lava flow from Mount Kilauea. These cachers are always up for the challenge because they love this hobby. Life has thrown iphone.cachers more than their share of surprises. In September of 2011, Mr. iphone.cacher was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and has since been fighting a brave battle. This amazing pair and their family are an absolute inspiration. They have managed to seize every adventure and are not slowing down, despite life’s obstacles.”

Nominated by cornishcay, One-Y Lee, a.k.a. kinglee, “is someone who never stops contributing to the geocaching community to keep the spirit and passion alive, especially in Asia, where we do not have a very large community of geocachers. One-Y started geocaching in Singapore many years ago, and even after moving to Hong Kong, his commitment to introducing this wonderful hobby to many new friends and keeping it alive for existing geocachers is absolutely amazing. He has organized geocaching activities in different parts of Hong Kong almost every weekend. Now, most local geocachers need not worry what to do during their weekend. One-Y hasn’t stopped there. He also organized trips to nearby countries like Thailand, China, and Macau for geocachers who are so keen to add additional countries to their statistical map. He raised so much awareness about this hobby that he was even featured in the local newspaper.”

lulusoy

lulusoy

Nominated by luisyopr, Lourdes, a.k.a. lulusoy, “is one of the most active geocachers from the island of Puerto Rico. ‘Lulu’ has managed to organize our very first official CITO event that was held in Puerto Real, Cabo Rojo. Lulu runs a podcast, called Cache D Island every two weeks. She loves to talk about anything and everything geocaching-related. Beginner geocachers can learn so much from her. She will guide them through everything until they have fallen in love with the hobby. Lulu also loves to explore new places and do new things. She and her crew organize different geotrips to various places across Puerto Rico. She is a great representation of an enthusiastic geocacher.”

sorry, but I can not recommend iphone.cachers as cachers of the month.  I was at an event earlier this year where the participants were specifically told it was not a race, they ended up in a a race with another team where members of the two teams were grabbing log books out of people’s hand while others were patiently waiting and then throwing the logbooks back in to the cache rather than handing it to the people they cut in front of.  There was also people laying down in the road in order to block other geomobiles from going forward in the event.  If I had been a new geocacher, I don’t think I would have continued after seeing their antics.  The location where this event was held had been the sight of some very unfriendly interactions between the police and cachers previously, if the police had seen what was going on that day, there could have been more unfriendly interactions.   Their actions and the actions of the other team did not positively promote geocaching that day.

I’m sorry, but I can not recommend iphone.cachers as cachers of the month.  I was at an event where new cachers were especially welcomed in April or May where the participants were specifically told it was not a race, they ended up making it a race with another team. Members of the two teams were grabbing log books out of people’s hand while others were patiently waiting and then throwing the logbooks back in to the cache rather than handing it to the people they cut in front of.  There was also people laying down in the road in order to block other geomobiles from going forward in the event.  If I had been a new geocacher, I don’t think I would have continued after being that rudely treated.  The location where this event was held had been the sight of some very unfriendly interactions between the police and cachers previously, if the police had seen what was going on that day, there could have been more unfriendly interactions.   Their actions and the actions of the other team did not positively promote geocaching that day.  They sound like wonderful people and assets to the geocaching community overall but their antics that day did nothing to impress myself and several other geocachers.

I do not remember being specifically told it was not a race.  On top of that, I see no problem with two groups of friends jokingly competing with one another.  As to your reference of anyone involved “grabbing log books out of people’s hands,” I don’t know how you have edited your memory, but that CERTAINLY did NOT happen.  There was one point when we (by the way, iphone.cachers is not part of this we) didn’t realize that someone was waiting behind us, so we (respectfully) replaced everything in the cache as found (putting the log book back in the container and closing it up).  When we stood up we realized that there were people standing behind us and we even APOLOGIZED; if we had known someone was waiting behind us, we certainly would have handed off the log book.  How this got turned into “throwing the logbooks back in the cache” I cannot tell.

I see no problem with two groups of friends having some friendly competition with each other, and if we were rude, it was certainly not conscious.  And personally, I think it is very rude of you to bring this up in your post.  If you didn’t want to vote for iphone.cachers, then simply don’t post anything at all.

  • Team Monkeyboy

Exactly how does this qualify as “Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these three geocachers you feel should be crowned”? You have no business airing your griefs in this forum… it’s neither the time nor place, especially when they are inaccurate.

I vote for Iphone_cachers, simply because they have to put up with the other Ohio cachers.

My vote is for Kinglee. Most of my finds have been his and everyone of them has been enjoyable and memorable. I have been geocaching with him on a cycling group and he went out of his way to make me and my son feel welcome. My son was in awe when he met the famous kinglee. My 7 year who does’t geocache even knows who he is.

Just alone to have been nominated makes me proud and very happy to know that I have friends that believe in me and follows me and most of all they recognize and enjoy as much or more than I do the wonderful
    world of Geocaching.

Now being a finalist is even more breath taken since I recognize and know there are a lot of geocachers who deserve to be as well recognized.

I hope and wish to all geocachers and to the other two finalists the best of luck and for them to continue to be the example of a geocacher and continue to promote geocaching thru all communities and countries
    as they have been doing.

Now one of my Dreams is to visit Kinglee country Hong Kong and I know I can count on him for tips. I know you are a mentor in Geocaching and will continue to be as well

Iphone cachers as well are a couple to admire and an example how a matrimony can enjoy their love and geocaching adventure. they have visit my Island of Puerto Rico and found some of my caches, is a small world after all, right?  It would have been nice to have met them.

I want to thank geocacher Luisyopr for my nomination. As I said before this is a great honor I also want to thanks all my fellow geocachers for their teachings and support.

My vote goes to lulusoy . I like to call her The Boricua Lara Croft. Amazing person and a great promoter of geocaching :)

  • Celtic Pretzel

My vote goes to iphone.cachers. The most outgoing caching couple you’ll ever meet. Besides their going after interesting caches all over the country, they help and encourage fellow finders locally. The team added a new member on May 5th, when little Sophia came into the world. 4 days later she was with Mom & Dad at a meet ‘n’ greet!

  • Team Monkeyboy

Wow – what are the odds that one?
