2 million reached!

Homepage counter at 5:11 am Seattle time on February 28

Join Geocaching in celebrating a major milestone! The 2 millionth active geocache was published on February 28 at approximately 5:11am Seattle time. It’s located in Australia. The 2 millionth active geocache is Overwatch #1 (GC46N4E). The traditional geocache is rated a terrain 3.5, difficulty 3.5 and promises to take geocachers to a lookout over the city of Alice Springs.  As of 6:12am Seattle time, the geocache has not yet been found.

To celebrate this milestone – Geocaching will be rewarding the global community with previously unreleased Geocaching Souvenirs. Hundreds of thousands of geocachers will receive never-before released country and region souvenirs. Find details here. Geocachers also have a new way to thank geocache hiders. Share this new “Thank a Geocache Hider” video with those who place and maintain geocaches so many enjoy.

Hi Eric, thanks for clearification. I shuold have read the other posts before posting this.

To your question: I guess, if the archiving keeps that effective not in two weeks. :)

But seriously: it’s increasing again, my be in two weeks?

I observed the last days: there were appr. 200 more caches every day. Now we have 1 997 442, appr 2500 remaining – 12,5 days.
( my reply shortly before seams to be lost)

Just made 4 new tradi’s and 1 bonus in Bassevelde, Belgium. I did my best for the 2 million ! :)

  • Christa de ruiter

    and one geocache found…allmost 2 million caches…

  • Gubbins4

Is it me or does the counter on the GC homepage seem like it’s not moving? I swear it even went backwards 1.5 days ago…..

  • http://twitter.com/V17ROB Rob

Those videos are fantastic, really amazing to see how Geocaching has grown. Think I’m a few off collecting them all though… :-S

  • Wally R

We have planted 80 +/- caches in the last year. We have done our part. Waiting for the Celebration to begin.

    We can hope!!!

what if the geocache count gets just over 2 million geocaches but then goes down again under the 2 million count of geocaches?! ha ha! i guess then we will have “2” 2 millionth active caches at least!!! i might just have a 2 chance at having the 2 millionth geocache!! there is always archiving going on in the geocaching community!! it’s just noticed more, when there are more geocaches archived then there are geocaches published for a given day. say 100 published but 500 archived for a given day!! also technically what there going to announce as the 2 millionth geocache hide is not the 2 millionth geocache hide, but the 2 milliomth geocache “published” instead. so it’s very likely that even if you technically hide the 2 millionth geocache, it will not be considered as the 2 millionth cache or even recognized as the 2 millionth because what groundspeak is going by is technically the 2 millionth published cache. the count could be 2,999,999, then you hide a cache, “the 2 millionth hide” but it will not be published for a while so it might actually be the 2,000,099 active cache. just an interesting analygy.

  • neolie

wenn das mal nicht der Aufruf zur Leitplankenflaniermeile wird. Ich hätte es besser gefunden, die 2millonste Dose im Nachhinein zu küren.

  • ella 23

    ^^^
    also gemeckert ist ja schnell…
    auf die 2000000 :-)

Chris – we’ve thought about these potentials. The plan is to name the 2 millionth active geocache as soon as it occurs. Even if we backslide – it’ll still be the 2 millionth active geocache published. What’s your guess on when we’ll hit the 2 millionth?

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Hi Wally – thanks for hiding geocaches and creating adventures for so many people.

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Thanks for the fun facts. We have more than 200 countries and territories on Geocaching.com, but we’re definitely not the UN or US State Department.

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Germany is definitely a big time contender… We’ll see when we reach 2 million. Hopefully that’s this week!

  • LizardRobb

Is there a list of the most found or visited geocaches?

  • chris geertsen

it all depends on if the trend of geocaches being published continues and the number of archived geocaches goes down for a given day. i am going with what you said. we will probably hit 2 million mid this week, if the trend continues. i will say this thursday if not this wensday for the 2 millionth cache! it might even hit 2 million late tuesday tomorrow. i feel like everyone is playing the card game black jack or to 21 trying to get there hide be 2 millionth published geocache. though it isn’t quite the same. ha ha !! because if your hide publishes after the 2 mil gets published you bust. if your hide gets published before the 2 mil you bust or have to hide another cache for a 2 chance. for us every 15 minutes groundspeak updates the count, that’s a hit for us!! ha ha!! and if the count goes over 2 mil thats a bust for you, if your hide did not get to be the 2 mil published geocache! ha ha! you see what i mean? ha ha. your cache has to be 2 mil cache published exactly.

  • chris geertsen

hey there. you know trying to get your hide be the 2 millionth published cache is just like playing the card game black jack or in other words to to 21. ha ha!! a hit is every 15 minutes that groundspeak updates the count. if the count goes over 2 mil and your hide is not the 2 mil published you bust. if it publishes before the 2 mil you have to hide another one for a 2 chance and hope the count does not go over 2 mil or that no one else gets the 2 millionth published geocache as there hide. your hide has to be 2 mil to be recognized. sort of like in black jack or 21 when you have to have the value 21 exactly or the dealer bust over 21 to win the game. it’s kind of similar to trying to get the 2 millionth published cache be yours.

  • chris geertsen

and if you think i from germany because of my last name your actually wrong. i am not from germany. actually i from utah united states. my last name actually come from my ancestors that once lived in denmark ironically right next to germany ha ha. i decended from my ancestors that once lived in denmark that’s right by germany so i actually kind of look german. but i am not from germany.

super sache, habe auch eines beigetragen.

  • librarygal

My wonderful supervisor wants a geocache in all our library locations, so I have been doing my part. I have one last location to add, but it is a cache that was already there just not officially listed. I have done all I can to help the owner of the cache. Hopefully, it will be up and running soon!

  • sequeira

    Já falta pouco!!!!!!

  • gustl91

    dem kann ich nur beipflichten

  • chris geertsen

i am willing to say if the count can get over 1,999,500 by the end of today, the 2 millionth geocache will be hit sometime tomorrow likely still in the morning. that is if the trend of geocaches being published and the amount of archiving going down continues

  • Fay Hampton

Two Owls have add a cache in celebration ” 2M or not 2M? ” Roll on 3,000,000..hope I’m around. Happy days!!

  • GEO Karen

Chris Geertsen compares the hunt for 2m with the game “Black Jack”.

I think it is more a game of tug-a-war between Europe and USA. Most likely the 2m-cache will be hid in one of either. So the game is will one part archive more than the other will post? The advantage is about to shift to the States now as it is soon evening and night i western Europe and day has dawned in the States. If the europeans can archive faster than the americans can post then we may be lucky enough to find the 2m-cache over here. If the americans are faster to post, they will most likely find the 2m-cache somewhere over there. Giving a slight chance to Asia and Oceania.

I think we will see the 2m-cache within the next 12 hours. Time is now 19.30 in Denmark (GMT+1).

  • Andrew

I really hope the 2 millionth cache is near me, i really want to find it.

  • brapp151

Doing my part, hid four caches within the last week.(2-Trad., 1-multi, 1- mystery)

  • clickcraftsman

We’re running a little local contest about when the ticker will hit 2M. Can we rely on GroundSpeak to publish the ‘official’ time, or do we have to stay up and watch the counter ourselves???

  • Jerenemas

I just archived 26 caches, so it will take a lllliiittttlllleee bit longer. But I am counting down as well. Will it be today?

  • Guest

“We’ll also announce the name and the location of the 2 millionth active geocache when it happens, which should be any day now.”

What do you do if there are two or more “2 millionth geocache”? E.g. if we have reached the mark of 2MM, than a few caches will be archived and after that we reached the mark again. The honest way is to announce all of them a “2 millionth active geocache” but not everybody will understand this now and in future.

This morning (European time), counter was still below the 2 000 000 active caches (short by ~250 000). And that’s it now! we made it!
Congratulations to Groundspeak and to all the hiders!

Having a cache get published 2 minutes after the ticker hits 2 Million is awesome. When will we know where it is……

  • http://blog.geocaching.com Eric Schudiske

Morning Rob – We just ran all the data. The 2 millionth active geocache is Overwatch #1 (GC46N4E). Looks like you’ll have to head to Australia (if you’re not there already) to log this geocache. Oh… and the First to Find is still available for it. Thanks for geocaching!

  • NunoFerreira.Photo

Congratulations to all of us :)
