See the ratings for this list. Rate This Bookmark List

The Fairbanks caching community is active and growing rapidly with more than 100 caches (up from less than 30 in 2004) within a 30 mile radius. This is a list of caches in the Fairbanks, North Pole and surrounding areas that we classify as "scramble" caches. Our definition of "scamble" is that you may get muddy, bug-bitten, hike between 1/2 and eight miles one-way, or use skis, dogs, snowmachine, ATV, horse or boat for access. Do some of these caches if you wish to experience some of the "real" Alaska.

GCTY9X Unknown Cache ¿Do Geese See God?
After solving the puzzle, this cache still offers an access challenge. Can you find the closest parking and driest route?

GCGG6N Traditional Cache Angel Rocks
Beautiful hike during spring, summer or fall. Good views, lots of wildflowers. The adventurous can hike all the way to Chena Hot Springs from here.

GCTYCK Traditional Cache Bear Paw Butte
Pleasant hike, ski, snowshoe trip from Chena Hot Springs Resort.

GC4863 Traditional Cache Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Float from Steese to Elliot Highways, bushwhack from Haystack subdivision, or ski the river in winter. Tough access no matter how you go for it.

GCQAF4 Traditional Cache Big Country
Access from Nome Creek drainage off the Steese Highway. Above the treeline and nothing but ridges and valleys as far as the eye can see.

GCX69K Traditional Cache Birch Hill Cache
This cache is a nice walk from the Birch Hill Nordic ski area parking lot. Those with post privileges can drive most of the way to the cache.

GC594C Traditional Cache Blueberry Domes
The first cache placed out here. Very scenic location out Murphy Dome Road. High clearance vehicles can drive all the way to the high point.

GCGARG Traditional Cache Bluff Point
This hike was a very pleasant surprise. A definite must do!

GCN84G Multi-cache Canine Caper
This cache ended up on the "Scramble" list because of the walking and driving distances involved. Access to the final stage is on a new boardwalk.

GC5ED Traditional Cache Chena Cache
One of Alaska's first five caches placed. Pleasant hike or ski from Chena Hot Springs resort.

GCGNAQ Traditional Cache Chena Coin Cache
Up on top of Bear Paw Butte. Couldn't find it under winter conditions, but it might still be there.

GCGPY0 Traditional Cache Chena Dome Cache
Toughest cache hike we've done yet. And...it's not even at the summit. The views are wonderful throughout the trip, though. Take plenty of water!

GCJ7ZW Traditional Cache Chena Lakes Cub Cache
Pleasant meander along the shore of Chena Lake.

GCNBKG Traditional Cache Chuggah Chuggah!!!
Read our winter and summer logs for ideas about accessibility. This is one of our favorite areas to run our dogs in the winter, but summertime offers great wildlife viewing if you wear the right footgear.

GCE27F Traditional Cache Clear Creek Butte Cache
Winter access is the best. See Ladybug Kids' log for details.

GCNDY1 Traditional Cache Ditch Niche
Visit a historic interpretive site for the Davidson Ditch which provided water for gold mining activities.

GCMXEK Traditional Cache Dutch Treat, een Nederlandse traktatie in Alaska
Easier to do in the winter if you can read the mushing trail map. Summertime is fun, too, due to all the waterfowl one can see along the way. Just remember, these are wetlands.

GCGCD3 Traditional Cache Fruit Cache
Fun little ramble to a popular rock climbing spot off the Elliot Highway.

GC94D6 Traditional Cache Granite Tors
Great hike, wonderful views, interesting geology!

GCH0T3 Traditional Cache Jet-Set
Lots of people frequent this area to exercise their dogs and themselves.
