Jim Henson's Dinosaur Train

Dinosaur Train Geocaching

The Jim Henson Company has enlisted the help of PBS stations, museums, zoos, and aquariums nationwide to hide Dinosaur Train themed geocaches. Each geocache features one of the dinosaurs found on the online Dinosaur Train Field Guide and contains educational information related to that dinosaur.

What is "Dinosaur Train"?

BuddyDinosaur Train is a PBS KIDS animated series produced by The Jim Henson Company that embraces and celebrates the fascination that preschoolers have with both dinosaurs and trains, while encouraging basic scientific thinking skills as the audience learns about life science, natural history and paleontology. Each episode features Buddy, an adorable preschool age Tyrannosaurus Rex, and includes two 11-minute animated stories along with brief live action segments hosted by renowned paleontologist Dr. Scott Sampson. Young viewers can join Buddy and his adoptive Pteranodon family on a whimsical voyage through prehistoric jungles, swamps, volcanoes and oceans, as they unearth basic concepts in life science, natural history and paleontology. The learning and fun are continued on the Dinosaur Train website at http://pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain, where visitors can play games with their favorite characters, print activity pages and watch clips from the show.

Why Dinosaur Train and Geocaching?

BuddyGeocaching encourages children to explore their surroundings, use observational skills and have an adventure right in their own neighborhood. Critical and creative thinking skills are necessary when seeking a geocache, and these cornerstones of problem solving and scientific thought are modeled and transferred to children when geocaching with an older caregiver.

At the end of each Dinosaur Train episode, Dr. Scott encourages young viewers and their caregivers to: "Get outside, get into nature and make your own discoveries!" To support that call to action, through the Dinosaur Train Geocaching Initiative, The Jim Henson Company has teamed up with Geocaching.com to provide easy access to these special themed geocaches and Dinosaur Train educational resources, including information on how to make your own Dinosaur Train geocache, found on the PBS Parents website at http://www.pbsparents.org/dinosaurtrain/.

How to Find a Dinosaur Train Geocache

With the help of a GPS-enabled device, each geocache will lead you to a safe, easy-to-access location. Visit the Dinosaur Train GeoTour for an up-to-date list of Dinosaur Train geocache locations.
