The name for this cache is “borrowed” from the equestrian triple
crown, which requires first place finishes in three separate
events. This triple crown also honors 3 firsts: placed the 1st day
of the new year; placed during our first ever snowshoe trip; and
first cache we’ve placed in winter.
Depart from the Burstall Pass parking lot. As soon as you cross
the Mud Lake dam, turn right onto the snowshoe trail (clearly
marked every few hundred meters with a fluorescent orange diamond /
black figure wearing snowshoes). Cache was hidden when there was
about a meter of snow on the ground. It may be difficult to find as
more snow accumulates over the winter, but we did try to minimize
this problem with the location we selected. We are also providing a
generous hint, to help compensate for the snow. All of that being
said, the cache may not be very well hidden come spring and summer,
so if you find it out in the open, please re-hide it a little
better. GPSr was reading +/- 4 meters.
On placement, this small camo-taped lock ‘n’ lock contained
various geocaching-related items and a few kid-friendly trinkets.
Please trade similar items. There are also quite a few finders
cards, but you’ll have to fill in the name - it was too cold and
windy to do this at the cache site and we didn’t decide on the
cache name until we were up there.
If you go after this cache during hiking season, please stick to
established paths and/or rocks whenever possible to minimize your
impact on the environment. As this is the first cache we’ve placed
in the winter, any constructive feedback would be welcomed. We
intend this to be the first in a small series of snowshoe
accessible caches.
