junger Mann meinen Gasthof.
kaum jemand an diesem Abend.
„Geocacher Stammtisch – Pfalz“ fragten. Keiner fragte nach einem
Namen.
A Geocacher meeting from the viewpoint of a host.
Once upon a time.
One day I was standing behind the counter as I always do when a
young man came into my inn. He came straight to me and asked for a
reservation for a table for 30 people. I asked when and what time
the reservation would be for and he immediately told me. When I
asked what name I should make the reservation under, he
contemplated for a moment before answering "Stammtisch". He looked
at me and my face must have registered a lack of understanding. The
individual explained it to be a "Tupperware Party", only without
the Tupper.
This did nothing to help my lack of understanding and I stood there
with a "question mark" on my face. Now, I have seen all manner of
groups come through with reservations, so an owner can not be too
surprised anymore. Therefore, I asked the man to write down the
name of the group and some information. He went to a table and
wrote the following down:
Geocacher tribe table - Party, 30 persons, date, time and a mobile
phone number.
He said he did not know the name of anyone who was coming yet.
I smiled and nodded (maybe it was an anonymous Tupperware party
without Tupper)? Perhaps Alcohol Anonymous or a self-help group
that would rather not say who they are?
On the evening of the reservation, I was happy to see many of the
"Geocacher Stammtisch - Pfalz" had arrived. None asked me about the
group reservation, they just sort of found themselves. Everyone
seemed somewhat low-keyed and reserved. They seemed entirely normal
upon first impression, like you or me. Families with children,
couples, dogs and even a couple of Americans were there. And all
the time I did not see one Tupperware or plastic container of any
type. Some were next to each other talking and writing on paper. I
looked over someone's shoulder and read a brief description of some
type or a route through the woods. Gradually, more and more arrived
and they seemed to be a well bonded group. I thought that perhaps
this was a role-playing game of some sort. Was perhaps it a type
role play? While serving, I can not get into too many
conversations, but I overheard bits and pieces about riddles, some
sort of hide and seek in strange places and types of codes (an
anonymous Tupperware party, without Tupper, role-playing company
and a self-help company)? Alcohol was not their problem, as there
seemed to be either too much or not enough available. Perhaps they
were a drug rehab group or a cult? It became more mysterious.
Gradually many put objects on the table; some saw out of like
coins, but it was no currency I had ever seen. Some pulled out
other objects that had a badge attached, almost like a type dog
tag. Also, another small book circulated, in which everyone was
allowed to record their attendance.
Otherwise all was quite normal. People ate drank talked and paid
their bills. Late in the evening (or early in the morning for I
don't recall), shortly before we wanted to close, the last one
left. And I never experienced something like it since.
A really very strange company!
