How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
Easy access but may be tricky to find. Coordinates will get you within 6 ft of the cache; for some reason when you get closer than that your GPS may start to give you false readings. This was tested several times with different GPS units and the result was the same.
This old hotel was built during the winter of 1911 as a hotel-boarding house for the growing rail-road community. In 1975 The Old Hotel incorporated as a non-profit group encouraging the arts and arts education in the community. The building had become Othello’s last remaining original railroad-associated structure. In 2000, the Old Hotel was placed on the Washington State Register of Historic Places; they promote local and regional art, the preservation of the unique building and welcoming the public as a tourist destination. The office of the Greater Othello Chamber of Commerce is located in The Old Hotel, with a well supplied Visitor Information Center. The Old Hotel Art Gallery has many displays, some which are folk art and handmade craft items created by local artesian. There are paintings, sculpture and other works of art that are exhibited in the rooms of the former railroad-era boarding house. The Old Hotel also houses a Café located in the original hotel dining room.
A 1946 all-steel caboose designed and built by the Milwaukee Railroad has been purchased by The Old Hotel, with help from the City of Othello, as a public historical exhibit. This rib-sided, bay-windowed rail car produced the year WWII ended, will become an interpretive artifact of its 40 years of daily service through Othello’s Milwaukee yards. Its exterior will display the railroad logo; the interior will house a photographic presentation of Othello’s 72 year Milwaukee Road heritage. Preparation for the public enjoyment of this caboose is in progress and scheduled to open this spring.
In addition to locating this small cache I encourage you to take a stroll in the past with the Milwaukee Railroad and view the wonderful gallery artifacts and visitor information. Enjoy!
