The Grand Union Canal links Birmingham to London with a waterway which is 145 miles long and contains 166 locks. This cache is one of a series to be found along or close to the Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire stretch of the canal.
The name of the locks here comes from the fact that right by this cache is where Berkhamsted used to have a gasworks. Gas production at the works ceased in 1955 and nothing much remains apart from the locks name. The cache is hidden below the lock on the Canal Fields, which is a popular spot for kids, dog walkers and anglers, so the difficulty rating reflects the numbers of muggles, not neccessarily the cache hide itself. As with all these canal caches, please take care near the water, especially if caching with kids. This is a high muggle area so please make sure that no muggles see you with the cache and do a good re-hiding job. Thanks.
