Climber's Paradise Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Sleuth: This cache is located within the boundaries of the recently created Summersville Lake State Park. Since construction of the amenities in this new park are currently underway, and geocaches in West Virginia state parks require permits, I have decided to archive this hide for now. Once construction is complete, I will consider finding locations for some new hides within the park. Thanks to all those who have taken the hike and found this cache over the years.

**Note: The geocoin that was supposed to be in the cache was not found. I have reported it as missing.

Geocache Description:

A small cache located near a popular rock climbing area beside Summersville Lake, just south of Summersville, West Virginia.

There is a gravel parking area about .30 mile north of Hughes Bridge beside U.S. Route 19. After parking, hike up the obvious trail beyond the red gate. Just follow the GPS coordinates. The straight-line distance from the parking area to the cache is .44 mile, but a bit longer by the trail since it curves around the hillside. The way is generally dry, but the last 300 feet or so can be muddy, especially after a heavy rain, and you will have to go under/over a few fallen trees that are across the trail. The hide is within 30 feet of the trail, so please resist the temptation to bushwhack. This cache is not recommended for young children due to the high cliffs and drop offs near the hiding place.

The cache is in a small 12 oz. Lock & Lock container. Initial contents are: a flashing safety reflector, magnet, basketball key ring, cross reflector, 2 polished glass gems, bottle opener, 7 assorted coins & tokens in holders, and a log sheet. The container is too small for a pen, so please bring your own writing instrument.

Nearby is one of the most famous rock climbing areas in the state, with such popular cliffs as Orange Oswald Wall, The Roof (Narcissus Cave), Long Wall, DC (Memorial) Boulder, Perrot Wall and Coliseum. In addition to the climbs, there are several trails, a couple of nice waterfalls, and some great high views of the lake. If you decide to explore this area, look for the old trail with the partially-collapsed bridge that you will see bearing off to the left as you pass by on your way to the cache. Take that trail, then go right on the next intersecting trail you come to. There are several paths going off toward the lake along that trail which lead to the various cliffs, waterfalls, and overlooks.
