How Geocaching Works

Take County highway NN to Grouse Ln. and turn left. Travel up to the gate and park anywhere on the road. Watch the road on the way up as there are potholes and sinkholes. Your best bet is to drive on the left side of the road.
The Geocache is located on the Wisconsin state wildlife refuge of Rib Mountain State Park with the permission of William H. Burshaw, Property Manager, of the Wisconsin DNR. Once parked just follow your coordinates to the cache. If you chose to follow the trail/road to the end, it will lead you to the old 3M quarry. The quarry has not been used since 1991 when 3M ceased its mining operation there. In 2001 the State of Wisconsin bought 257 acres of property from 3M which included the old quarry and some wooded forest land along the road. The geocache is actually located on the old wooded property used by the 3M mining company. Remnants of the old quarry are located throughout the area; most of them closer to the quarry. If you choose to walk up to the quarry, it’s about another ½ mile up the road. The view and terrain are very beautiful up there. The road used to circle around to the upper portion of the quarry, but I haven’t been up there in a while and don’t know if it’s still open. Either way, from the top or the bottom, it is just beautiful up there.
