Geocache Description:

This is part of an event called Geocache the Bluffs. These caches will introduce you to the wonderful history of the Council Bluffs area. Cache site is flat and easily accessed. No bushwhacking.

The railroad played a key part in history and transportation in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Rock Island Depot is the last passenger depot still standing from the original six that were built when the transcontinental railroad crossed the Missouri River. The strategic position meant that Council Bluffs' economic history was developed from the contruction, relocation, removal and expansion of railroad related facilities. The depot was built in 1899 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Guests may visit the mens and womens waiting rooms, tour the outdoor railcar collection and view the miniature HO model railroad. The last Rock Island passenger train pulled out of the depot on May 31, 1970. March 31, 1980 was the last day of operations for the Rock Island Railroad. The depot stood vacant until 1985 when the Council Bluffs City Council leased the depot to the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County. The depot was restored and is a museum and welcome center. Railroading had a profound impact on the development of Council Bluffs. There is nothing else that ifluenced the city's history so dramatically for so long.
