Geocache Description:

AGT-Venango-Southern Half

The geocache listed on this page is a
regular geocache, however, it is also part of the
Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project
designed to promote a pleasant and positive
experience and image of the Allegheny National
Forest region and its gateway communities. The
AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to
assist both residents and visitors to the area in

self inking rubber stamp which you should use to
stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify
that you found it. When you have found a minimum
of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your
AGT passport validated and receive a
commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at
participating locations. You must have your official
AGT passport with you when you find this cache in
order to stamp it. Visit the AGT website at
www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and
a listing of participating locations where you may
pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your

This cache is located in Oil Creek State Park. It takes you on a journey on the southern half the Oil Creek bike trail. Your round trip will be ten miles and begins at the above coordinates. The coordinates for the final cache is in the box below. You will need to replace the red letters with numbers that you get from the 6 areas you see listed below the box. The cache container is a green ammo box. Also, remember on your journey by bicycle that this was the original railroad that ran through the valley in the 1860’s. The train stopped at oil boom towns to pick up oil and passengers, just as you are going to be stopping at some of these very locations to pick up clues.

Actual Cache Coordinate...

N 41° 3A.1BC W79° 3F.E0D

Replace the red letters with numbers from the questions below.
Here are the 6 stops (In sequence as you travel) along the path that will give you the numbers that you need for the actual cache...
A -N41 31.840 W79 40.138

Count the number of pedestals (in the creek) holding up the bridge, plus two.
Replace A above.

This is the site of the world’s first riparian well. As you look down stream you will notice large V-shaped cement structures (created to break up ice or divert logs floating downstream) with pipe sticking out of them. This is the site of boomtown Pioneer.

B -N41 32.124 W79 39.533

What is the number on the trail of geology post? Now subtract five.
Replace B above.

The marker is placed here to point out a rock outcropping. This is also located near the site of the Sherman Well. The Sherman well was first dug using the spring pole method, later changed to digging using a horse operated rig, and finally using a steam engine. This well would later produce 1,500 barrels a day, and an earning of about $2,000,000 total.

C -N41 32.264 W79 39.414

Number on the mile marker, minus three. Replace C above.

This is located near the site of the Noble and Delamater Well. A spring pole (an example of which can be found in Drake Well Museum) was erected and the well was drilled by boot power. This well produced around 3,000 barrels of oil a day, making it the largest producing well in the valley and its owners into millionaires.

D -N41 32.847 W79 39.484

The number of benches located at this spot, minus one.
Replace D above.

I’m not sure of any historical significance that was located here, but sometimes it’s just great to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery that nature has created for us.

E -N41 33.206 W79 39.316

The number of letters in the first word on the post marking the stream.
Replace E above.

The stream is named after a boomtown that once thrived here. It sprang up here largely because of the success of the Sherman Well. It later would become an important center for cooperage (barrel making) and shipping. The town also became involved with the Bullwhip War, when the out of work teamsters tried to burn down the town to stop the oil pipeline.

F -N41 33.957 W79 39.516

The number of letters on the sign at this location.
Replace F above.

This is located in the former boomtown of Miller Farm. Miller Farm was an important shipping and refining center, in addition to its substantial oil producing wells. This is the site where the world’s first successful oil pipeline was constructed, connecting Miller Farm with the town of Pithole, and igniting the Bullwhip War.

You MUST walk to the final cache site, NO BIKES ALLOWED
