This cache has been archived.

Burgi Dad: Looks like someone needed a tackle box. This one is gone I guess. Nice spot though if someone else wants the area.

Geocache Description:

Placed to highlight the Nature Trail behind the Honeymoon Island State Park's Nature Center. Come walk with Mother Nature on a little slice of her own Honeymoon home turf.

Welcome to Honeymoon Island State Park!

From the Honeymoon Island State Park website:

The pioneers called it Hog Island, but it became Honeymoon Isle in 1939 when a New York developer built 50 palm - thatched bungalows for honeymooners. Today, visitors can drive across Dunedin Causeway to enjoy the sun - drenched Gulf beaches, mangrove swamps, and tidal flats. Nature lovers will find osprey nests, a wide variety of shorebirds, and one of the few remaining virgin slash pine forests in South Florida. The park boasts several nature trails and bird observation areas. Visitors can swim, fish, and snorkel in the warm waters of the Gulf or picnic while they enjoy the beautiful scenery.

To enhance your experience, visit the recently opened Rotary Centennial Nature Center. Open daily from 9am to 5pm, the observation deck provides a spectacular view of the St. Joseph Sound, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. Inside you will learn more about the natural communities and history of Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands.

Park Ranger G contacted us with a specific goal in mind. Although many of the thousands of Honeymoon Island visitors stop by their Nature Center, not many know there is an educational Nature Trail behind the Center. She believes a GX will encourage people, especially families, to Take a Walk on The Wild Side.

This cache should fit the bill, as it is a family-friendly trading cache. So there is always something worth looking at, please make sure to always:

She also believes (as do we) that GXers will respect the area’s natural environment, if not make it better than we found it. No bushwhacking required -- once you get to the Groves of Man, look around the edges. No need to step into the trees. You'll be searching for an ammo can sitting under a tree. Please make sure to cover it well when you leave.

While searching for this cache, be aware of GeoMuggles and other curious eyes. Your best bet is to act like you're birdwatching, taking pictures, and/or CITOing. CITOing at ANY cache is one of the BEST ways to deflect a curious GeoMuggle's attention -- try it; you'll see!

Hours of Operation: Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days a year.

Park Admission Fees as of 10/1/2009:
$8.00 per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.
$4.00 Single Occupant Vehicle.
$2.00 Pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.
$4.00 per vehicle: sunset fee, starting one hour prior to sunset.

~~ Have a blessed day. Happy caching. ~~
