This cache is part of the ten-county Allegheny
GeoTrail project. It contains a special stamp to be used in
your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to obtain before setting
out to find the cache. Please do not remove the stamp! Get your
passport stamped at 6 or more AGT caches within a county, and get a
FREE geocoin representing that county. There are ten different
coins to collect, plus a bonus 11th coin if you get all 10
counties. Click the logo for more information!
This geocache will take you into the northeastern
portion of Jefferson County, in the vast State Game Lands No. 54.
The headwaters of North Fork Creek begin their long journey to
Brookville here.
Begin by parking at the designated parking area (not in front of
the gate) here: 41° 19.857N, 78° 55.094W, on Rainetown Road off of
SR949 (turn here: 41° 19.973N, 78° 55.133W). Follow the road east
for about a mile and turn to the right here: 41° 19.794N, 78°
53.976W. This road will turn SW, then SE, then E, and then south
before reaching the cache area. Use the aerial photo map I've
included, or the waypoints, to not get turned around. You will be
on this road for about a mile until you reach this point near a
feed plot: 41° 18.949N, 78° 53.652N. It is suggested that you
follow the western edge of the field to about halfway across, then
begin your trek to the cache, thus avoiding downed trees from past
logging. The cache area is littered with rocks, boulders, and some
fallen trees, hence the higher terrain rating. Just use caution and
common sense while exploring. The cache is in an easy location and
requires NO rock climbing.
Watch for snakes and other critters in this area, and because
you are on Game Lands, always wear plenty of orange during hunting
season. See the PA Game Commission web site for hunting schedules.
Happy caching!
