Geocache Description:

A relatively short hike will bring you to this cache in the Hatch Run Conservation Demonstration Area.

AGT-WARREN-BROKEN SENTINEL

The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular geocache, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at www.geocaching.com .

A hike of one half to three quarters of a mile round trip will take you to the cache. The cache contains Warren County stamp #03 for the Allegheny GeoTrail passport. Remember to stamp your passport but MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE STAMP FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW. DO NOT REMOVE IT FROM THE CACHE.

This cache can be reached by a one-half to three-quarters mile hike, round trip distance.

Parking is located at: 41º 53.634N, 79º 07.238W

There is a small kiosk at the eastern (uphill) end of the parking area that has a large map of the facility. There are usually smaller maps in a holder at the kiosk that can be taken as well. You may wish to refer to the large map or take a smaller map when reviewing the directions to the cache.

There are two ways to get to the cache without any bushwhacking. The cache is within 75 feet of the trail.
1. Take the main trail (actually a dirt/stone road) next to the kiosk and cross the bridge. Head uphill on the main trail, through the woods until you reach the open field on the left. Turn left onto a wide, grassy trail. It leads around a pond and runs along a wood line up a hill. At the top of the hill, the grassy trail turns to the right, but you want to take the small trail that goes off to the left. There is a carsonite marker here. Follow this trail downhill and after a short distance your GPSr should have you near the cache. After locating the cache, you can retrace your steps, or you may continue on the smaller trail down the hill. At the bottom, you'll cross two bridges and run into another small trail. Turn left onto this trail and follow it back to the main trail very near to the parking area.
2. Take the main trail across the bridge, then turn left onto a smaller trail after a very short distance. Follow this trail next to the creek until another trail comes in from the right. Turn onto this trail - you'll cross two bridges immediately - and follow it uphill. Before long your GPSr should show you close to the cache. After locating the cache, you can retrace your steps or continue uphill. After a short distance you'll exit the woods onto a wide, grassy trail. Turn right onto this trail and follow it downhill along the wood line and past a small pond. A short distance beyond the pond this trail runs into the main trail, which you can follow downhill to the parking area.

The cache is a .50 caliber ammo can, and contained the following items when placed:
  • First to Find prize
  • flashlight
  • small stuffed animal dinosaur
  • Silly Putty egg
  • package of hand warmers
  • wooden train whistle
  • glow in the dark high bounce ball
  • deck of $100,000 playing cards
  • two plastic character drinking straws
  • two wooden pencils embossed with "Geocaching Makes Me Smile"

Please feel free to bring a picnic and spend some additional time hiking the other trails in this wonderful facility. While here you may also wish to find Hatch Run Cache.

A very special thanks to the Hatch Run Conservation Demonstration Area for permitting placement of this cache!
