Appalachian Trail to Bluff Mountain and Little Ottie Memorial
Access the Appalachian Trail where it crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway between Milepost 51 and 52. There is a pulloff there to park and hike but there are no signs pointing out the direction to Bluff Mountain. Take the AT uphill. Continue to the left where the trail splits as the right fork goes to the Punchbowl Shelter. The hike took me about an hour (50 minutes) up and 45 minutes back. Once on top you'll find the piers for the old fire tower and the marker where Little Ottie's body was found (See Little Ottie cache for more details of his story) . You will also find one of the best views in Amherst/Rockbridge County.
Cache is a 30 Cal. ammo can located at the above co-ordinates. Inside are a log and assorted stuff. Hope you enjoy the outing. Please replace the Geocache in the exact spot and hide well.
