Geocache Description:

***Congrats to LargeFry for FTF on the entire traverse and other groups who completed the traverse before the last two caches were published.***Before you leave, print the trail map near the bottom of this page. In Deep River on Rt. 154; look for a white oval Canfield Woods sign across from Deep River Market; parking for 6-8 vehicles. Dogs allowed. The whole series was meant to be done together in a loop, so plan on 3-4 hours to complete. Otherwise they can be done individually.

Welcome to Canfield-Meadow Woods Nature Preserve, a 300-acre area of ridges, valleys, wetlands, and stonewalls with marked trails in Deep River and Essex. Earl and Margaret Canfield acquired this land over many years and then worked toward its preservation as open space when they relocated to North Carolina in the mid-seventies. In 2005, their son David returned with his three children and five grandchildren for a special ceremony to honor his parents. This three-cache series is designed to acquaint you with this wonderful area by leading you on a circumnavigation throughout most of the preserve; little bushwhacking is required and you won’t have to retrace your steps. The caches are designed to be completed all at once but can certainly be done one at a time. The total round-trip mileage is about five miles. For Fractured Erratic, out and back is about 4 miles. In addition to the natural features you will visit, I have provided coordinates for several others, which I was tempted to place micros in, but finally decided to just point them out for your enjoyment. A special FTF prize awaits someone in the #3 final. Good luck and enjoy!
