Geocache Description:

Messalonskee Stream Trail Series of 7 hides. Start with Messalonskee Trail Series #1 and find in order. Begin in Oakland at parking coordinates N 44 32.834 & W 069 42.688. Each of the first 6 caches contains a part of the coordinates that will lead you to #7.

Messalonskee Stream Trail, Oakland.
If you are lucky enough to have a geocache partner with another vehicle and want to see the whole trail (a 3 mile hike), you can leave a vehicle at the Rice Rips Rd. end of trail parking at coordinates: N44 34.040 & W069 41.068. Otherwise, you can hike in from Oakland to the last cache and return the same way (about a 3 1/2 mile hike round trip).
It is also possible to do this series from a canoe or kayak off the Messalonskee Stream.

Trail was planned in 2005, constructed in 2006, and opened in 2007.
Parking is within a chain link fence on the Waterville side of Messalonskee Stream opposite from the Oakland Town Office (see parking coordinates). There is also parking at the other end, north of Rice Rips Road close to the penstock. (see parking coordinates)
This is a hiking trail. There are many hills to climb.
Walk through a gap in a chain link fence, checking out the penstock pipe leading to CMP's first hydroelectric power station. Proceed into the woods and see the former Cascade Woolen Mill from across the Messalonskee stream gorge. (THIS MILL BURNED IN EARLY 2010) Cross the power line easement (which has a nice mountain bike trail) and keep on the path. It is mostly single track, crosses several footbridges and passes through beautiful hemlock woods to where the Stream broadens out into a lake. Keep going down, around a peninsula, then up to the last cache of this series, # 7 "Early Fences". The trail continues (if you wish) up to the power line and along it until you reach the dam access road. Turn left, and proceed towards steel steps which take you over the wood and creosote penstock and along an access road to Rice Rips Road.
