This is a Feburary cache celebrating the Linn County Conservation's 50th Anniversary activities
In 2008, the Linn County Conservation Board will celebrate 50 years of service to Linn County residents. A yearlong celebration is planned to highlight all the outdoor recreation opportunities available right here in Linn County. In celebration of Linn County Conservation's 50th Anniversary there will be 50 GeoCaches placed within various parks and recreation areas in the next year. Some of the caches will reveal a "clue" that will enable you to be eligible for a special prize drawing at the end of the season (December 2008).There is one featured cache each month. This is not a featured cache.
Additional information can be obtained from the Linn County Parks Website and the Iowa Geocachers Website.
Pinicon Ridge Watercraft Concession History.....
The Watercraft Concession at Pinicon Ridge County Park was established in 1973 in order to provide water recreation opportunities on the Wpasipinicon River and the backwaters within the park. The Conservation Department has managed the operation since 1994 - prior to that time we had various concessionaires providing service under lease-management agreements.
Currently, the concession offers paddleboats and canoes for use "in-park", and an up-river canoe trip service for leisurely floats back down the river to the park. (See "Canoe Trips" under ATTRACTIONS for more information on these shuttle trips) The quiet backwaters and the Wapsipinicon River within Pinicon Ridge provide several miles of water trails to explore, fish & recreate. Watercraft can be taken right up to camp or picnic sites - overnight canoe rentals are available to registered campers in the Flying Squirrel Campground complex.
Two, three or four-person paddleboats and canoes are available for rent at $7.00, $8.00 and $9.00 per hour respectively. Hours of operation for the concession are: 1:00 - 5:00 PM on Monday-Friday and 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays & Holidays (river & weather conditions permitting), The concession is open on weekends from lat May thru the first weekend in October; and, seven days a week from Memorial Day through late August. For additional information, you can contact the concession directly (in season) at (319) 438-1961, or by contacting the Conservation Office at (319) 892-6450.
During the summer months you may need to rent a paddle boat to reach the cache. Otherwise, bring your own boat because it is deep water here. The difficulty rating is lower when the ice will support you. The container is a ammo box anchored to the ground. A few goodies and some travel bugs to start the cache out.
