Eagles Peak, standing at 1682
feet, is the second highest named peak in Ashland County and is
less than a mile from the highest peak in the county, Mount
Whittlesey at 1872 feet. This range has long been known for
its mining activity by evidence of the ruins of the Birkshire
Mine that can still be found on the way to the lookout tower
on Mount Whittlesey. The view from here is one of the more remote
and beautiful in the region.
Start at N46 18.155 W90
38.421 on CR-P just south of the city of Mellen. A waypoint is
given to the spur trail that leads to Eagles Peak. Approximately
1.0 miles one-way with an elevation gain of about 300 feet.
WARNING!...The ghost of a man wearing military attire has
appeared on the pinnacle of Eagles Peak examining the scenery.
This phantom is extremely active in this
area... |
