By now you've spent a great deal of time getting around this small
town of Menasha and soaking in its uniques historical points of
interest and little treasures. This town has a rich history
as you've no doubt come to appreciate, and like all towns in
Wisconsin, it's had its ups and its downs but is fortunate to be
feeling pretty good about itself of late, thanks to hard working
citizens and insightful town officials and representatives - all
with a strong and vibrant vision for the future.
This is a final recap of everything you've come to know (and some
stuff you haven't) about Menasha by doing the Laughing Waters
series and one last chance to get a cache before you reach the city
limits.
A: Menominee make the first of two
treaties ceding their lands on the lower Fox River to the federal
government.
B(+1): Federal land offices
transferred from Green Bay to Menasha, making it the center of all
real estate transactions in the state.
C: First industrial union
organized at Marathon Corp. following the National Labor Relations
Act.
D: New Tayco Street bridge opened
with bascule lift mandated by War Department and the new width of
the highway.
E(+1): Racine Street bridge
constructed at a cost of $500,000. Dave Koslo welcomed home with
parade after pitching for the New York Giants in the World
Series.
F(+1): Village board underwrites
the cost of relocating the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad
across the river and canal.
G: Koslo Park is dedicated in
memory of Dave Koslo.
H: Declining membership forces
Germania Society to fold, but Germania Hall remains open.
I: Federal government takes over
ownership of the Fox-Wisconsin waterway.
J: Whiting Paper Mill explodes
during fire, killing 16 spectators and firemen.
MENASHA: Named after the Indian
word Menashay meaning “settlement on the
island,” along with its sister city Neenah meaning
“clear water” they are collectively also taken
to mean "Laughing Waters" for the sounds that emanated from
the twin falls on either side of the island.
This series will not only introduce you to the
city of Menasha, but also give you some significant historical
knowledge about this town which many drive through just to get from
the north side of the Valley to the south. So, the next time you
pass through town, you might want to take a little time to look
around and appreciate its many unique offerings and
establishments.
A huge thanks to Alderman Taylor for providing even deeper
historical insight and information than I was able to obtain. It is
our hope that after doing the series you will be inclined to stop
for a bit the next time you drive through town and appreciate what
a unique little community it has been and continues to be by
re-inventing itself.
