Geocache Description:

This earthcache is located on flat land, and it is possible to drive almost to the coordinates if you bring your car to Utsira. It should not be any problems to find the location. There is no box to be found at this location.

11.000 years ago, most parts of Norway was covered by several 1000 meters of ice. This period is referred to as the ice-age. The ice age ended about 2000 years later. During this 2000 year, the ice melted down. The weight of the ice was so heavy, that the land was about 200 meter below todays level. The land is still rising. There are two element to be learned at this point; Big stones being moved by the glacier, and the erosion effect by freezing water. The ice that covered Norway was on a constant movement. During its movement, the ice collected stones of various size, sand and clay. This debris was left behind when the ice melted, either directly where the ice melted, or transported further in front of the glacierfront or with the many rivers with melting water. The stone you see in front of you is a typical stone that has been left behind by the retracting glacier. There are several big stones on Utsira that came with the ice. In addition, the Klovning stone (The name “Klovning” can be translated to”Cleave”) has been divided into several parts. This has been done by frozen water. Water is one of few substances that increase the volume when the temperature decreases. Almost all other substances increase the volume with increasing temperature. Water increases the volume by approx 8 % when it turns into ice (water has the highest density at 4 °C which is quite an interesting fact). When water freezes inside a crack, the crack can be expanded because of the increasing volume of the ice. The separation of the parts is caused by freezing water. This can of course take a lot of years.

In order to log this cache, you have to estimate the circumference of the stone and email the answer to me.
Uploading a picture of you in front of the stone is optional!.

For å kunne logge denne cachen, så må du estimer omkretsen rundt steinen, og send meg svaret på en email.
Hvis du vil, kan du legge ut et bilde av deg/dere ved steinen i loggen din. Dette er valgfritt!
