Cherokee County Tour is series of caches to showcase historical and/or unique POI in Cherokee County Iowa. The caches are in no particular order. As I remember or discover a POI that I feel would make a good cache site I will add it to the series. I hope you enjoy the tour.
Before there was a Quimby, there was a Wendell. When the railroad changed it’s anticipated route, Wendell was left on the wrong side of the river. Quimby was founded in late August of 1887, and originally retained the name Wendell. However, citizens felt that Wendell was a "too Republican sounding name" so the Quimby label came into play. The name itself was taken from the Assistant Superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad and was officially set up on October 3, 1887. In a matter of months, the town had two grain elevators, a grocery store, a general store, a hotel, a creamery and a hardware store. Most of the original homes built here were to house the business owners. In 1889, Quimby's first newspaper, the Quimby Herald, was distributed to the town's population of 250.
The original Wendell Post office site is quite near here on private property. This is as close as I could get to the originally site.
