Near Yerkes Observatory, where I originally wanted to place the cache. When I requested permission from them, they declined. This is a very cool place to visit, so I'm placing a micro cache just down the street. Sidewalk terrain all the way!
Yerkes Observatory is home to the largest refracting telescope in the world.
Yerkes Observatory is a facility of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Chicago. It was established in 1897 on Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Until the mid-1960's, Yerkes Observatory housed all of the Department's activities. Today the 77-acre, park-like site in southeast Wisconsin provides laboratory space and access to telescopes for research and instruction. A substantial fraction of the University's library holdings in astronomy are housed at Yerkes.
This site will take you to an interesting history of the Observatory, too long to print here. (visit link)
Free tours are offered Saturdays only: 10:00am, 11:00am, or Noon. They do not take reservations.(245-5555) N 42*34.479 W088*33.384 will take you to the entrance. If you take a short drive down this road you will see the beautiful building holding the telescopes. Plan your caching trip on a Saturday morning, and you can see the telescope, too!
This cache is a short walk down the sidewalk from the entrance to Yerkes Observatory, but you'll want to park near the cache, even if you decide to take the tour mentioned above. Muggles will be driving (oh, golly, a pun!) and swinging close by, so use care. You won't need a telescope to find this cache, but you may need x-ray eyes to see through the camo! :)
NOTE: ***PLEASE do NOT disassemble the site! If you move ANYTHING in search of the cache, put it back exactly as found. DO NOT MOVE ANYTHING BIGGER THAN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND! You do NOT have to move anything to grab the cache, it is in within VIEW and REACH of the SIDEWALK. Thanks.***
It's easier to find than it first appears. I have increased the original difficulty rating based on the camo job and the muggle factor per another geocachers suggestion.
You are looking for a beautiful brass perfume spray bottle case, that has been given an anti-face lift to become a geocache. ;)In other words, it looks NOTHING like it did originally. Please bring a pen/pencil to sign the log, and replace carefully in the EXACT spot. Thanks!
CONGRATULATIONS to ZoOg and Kurdt318 for joint FTF!
