The Aydelott-Rosenberger House was built
around 1868 by George
Aydelott. Back in those
days the trees would have been cleared in front of his house
allowing the family to enjoy a nice river view from their front
porch. The Aydelott
house became the home of the Rosenberger family in the 1930’s. In
1997 the Louisville Metro Parks Department purchased the 22 acre
farm from the family and added it to the 300 acre
Riverside. In 1998
Riverside was designated a Jefferson County Historic Landmark
District.
The cache is located along the old road between the house and the
river. The easiest
approach is from the farm driveway that extends from old Bethany
Lane. Along this road
you will pass near the Aydelott-Rosenberger house. Please view the
house from a distance.
The house is scheduled for restoration before it is open to the
public and Riverside does not want the public visiting the house at
this time. Restoration
plans call for once again opening up an unobstructed view of the
Ohio River from the house’s front
porch. While near the
house also notice the interesting old
windmill. It appears
that the pump below the windmill was designed so that it could also
be connected by a belt to a tractor’s
flywheel. This would
allow for water pump operation on those non windy days.
You can access Old Bethany Lane either from Farnsley-Moreman
Landing by taking the Ohio River Levee Trail or by parking off
Greenbelt Highway at the entrance to Old Bethany Lane (N38 06.258
W85 53.628). If you park here please do not block the locked road
gate or you will be subject to being
towed. Once you cross
the Levee Trail look for the second road gate straight
ahead. Behind this gate
is the continuation of Old Bethany
lane. Hikers and bikers
can easily go around both road gates.
You are looking for a 3 inch by 2 inch bottle
hidden along the farm road just before you get to an open
field. I saw 3 wild
turkeys out in this
field the last time I
was here. This cache
was laid out to make it easily accessible for hikers or bikers
without the need to bushwhack.
