Geocache Description:

Drive-in Theater series

Once upon a time Coos and Douglas Counties had several drive-in theaters. I have fond memories as a child and young adult going to the drive in. Growing up my brothers and I would collect pop and beer bottles until we had a dollar, the exact fee per car at the Myrtle Lane Drive drive-in theater. A Safeway bag full of mom’s home popped popcorn and we were set.

The single-screen Starlite (GC7PEBD) Drive-In in the Green District of Roseburg, OR. opened June 23, 1954 with “Beachhead”. On December 25, 1971 a 300-seat walk-in cinema was added onto the snack bar. When it was sold to a Native American tribe around 1995, a clause required it to not show movies for 20 years.

The Pine Drive-In Theater (GC7VJWZ) was opened on June 1, 1950 on a 12 acre lot at the corner of Alameda Ave and Vine in Roseburg, Oregon. The theater used reel to reel changeover films and sound was via a speaker hung in the car window. The theater was operated by Umpqua Amusements theater chain. After the original owners passed away the theater was run by Vern and Nancy Jewell who ran it from 1984 throiugh 1987. The theater closed for good on August 30, 1987. The last featured showing was "Beverly Hills Cop 2" and Crocodile Dundee."

The Bay drive in (GC1GBP3) in Coos Bay was a littler further for us to travel from Coquille, but I attended movies here with aunts and uncles. The theater was closed after a storm toppled the screen. I believe it was the infamous Columbus Day storm in 1962.

The Motor-vu drive-in (GC1GBP0) with its 500 car capacity was the last to operate in the County. I believe it closed in the late 1970’s, It is now a place where you can find both young and old engaged in sports activities. Access to the Motor-vu cache is open to the public through the rear parking area. The orginal entrance when the theater was open was on the front of the current building.

The Shoreline drive-in (GC1N2EK) was located on Bolin Island (Reedsport) was built in the 1950's and disappeared a couple of decades later. This cache is an easy stop and grab - you do not need to go on private property to access the cache.

The Myrtle Lane Drive In (GC1GBNX) was located a couple miles up Rink Creek Road in Coquille. The sign pointing the way was at Rink Creek Road and Highway 42, which is where the cache location has been placed for an easy grab on your way east or west on Highway 42.
