Before satellite technology and GPS use, one of the definitions of "cache," according to Merriam-Webster, was "a hiding place, especially for concealing and preserving provisions or implements." It's not hard to imagine that this park probably had REAL caches at one time, as this was the embarkation point for Native American canoe portages between the Bay of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Storing provisions, equipment and supplies at this crossing spot seems likely, back before European settlement of the region and the building of the canal.
This is another of the lesser-known parks I seem to place caches in.
