Geocache Description:

Mt Drury once stood as an independent island, but the gradual build up of the Mt Maunganui tombolo has absorbed it into the mainland. It was known to the Maori as Hopukiore and was used as a site for a carving school. The caves were once used by early Maori for burials and the terraces on the north-eastern slopes are further evidence of Maori occupation.

The aerials on top of the hill are used by the Port of Tauranga watch office for communication with ships.

A well established loop track through beautiful pohutakawa trees takes you to the lookout and provides excellent views over Pilot Bay. The gentlest way up is via the ocean beach side - follow the “road” (we’ll call it Drury Lane) up to the lofty summit elevation of around 40 metres… watch out for the Muffin Man on the way up who lives “you know where…”

Cache is a 200ml Sistema. Best approached from the downhill side. Sorry, no pencil - please bring your own.

Note: Apparently a poison trap has recently been placed very nearby. Please take care and don't mistake this for the cache! I will endeavour to correct this when I'm over that way next
