St. John the Baptist´s Church in Karnol Traditional Cache

Beneath St. Andrä, in a charming position on a hill, the small church of St. John the Baptist is situated in Karnol. Mentioned already in 1133, the renovation and the decor of the 15th century characterize the little house of God.A tender net- vault covers the inside, that impressions with cycles of frescoes of different periods. Beside the life and the death of the church patron John, the works of mercy and some saints, the martyrdom of the saint Ursula is of extraordinary quality.The representation in the apsis dates back to the Renaissance (around 1520), it shows the return of the saint Ursula with 11,000 virgins from Rome to Köln, where arrow riflemen of the Huns’ king Guam kill her. The wide scenery of the frescoes is flanked by John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

Al di sotto di S. Andrea e al sommo di un’affascinante collina rotondeggiante, sorge la chiesetta di S. Giovanni Battista. Benché documentata già nel 1133, ora sono le ristrutturazioni e gli arredamenti del XV secolo a caratterizzarla.
Una dedicata volta a costoloni ricopre l’interno che contiene cicli di affreschi di diverse epoche stilistiche. Accanto alla Vita e Morte del patrono S. Giovanni, alle Opere di Misericordia e ai vari Santi, è soprattutto il Martirio di S. Orsola a godere di un’eccellente qualità artistica. La raffigurazione absidale risale al Rinascimento (1520 c.) e propone il ritorno di S. Orsola con le sue 11.000 consorelle da Roma a Colonia, dove venne uccisa dagli arcieri del re degli Unni. L’ampio paesaggio dell’affresco fa da sfondo da S. Giovanni Battista e a S. Giovanni Evangelista.
