Geocache Description:

The cache is not hidden at the coordinates listed but it is nearby.
The coordinates listed are not only in the vicinity of this cache but
also the Tree Huggers cache (GC1MJB1).

The hike is fairly short and on mostly easy terrain.

The cache is a small camo lock&lock with a pencil and a log.

The soccer league raised money for a charity in the community. The local team was assigned the task of tallying each regional team’s contribution to the charity. The totals were fairly large sums. The team got done tallying with plenty of time to spare before practice. So Mitch, who was a quiet second stringer, introduced the team to what he called the magic number.

He noted that if you take any given string of numbers, such as his team’s charity sum of $1297, and scramble the numbers, such as 9271, and then subtract the second number from the first number you will get what he called a magic number.

In this case 1297-9271 = -7974.
He said the cool thing about this magic number is that if, for instance, Coach secretly removed any of the digits, such as the 4, from the magic number and gave Mitch only 797, Mitch would be able to tell him what digit Coach took without ever having seen the magic number in the first place.

So, Mitch let Coach take another number from the charity tallies, scramble the number, do the math and secretly remove one digit and Mitch guessed the missing digit quick, much to everyone’s amazement. He left practice that day with everyone on the team wondering how he had done the trick.

The next day at practice Mitch explained he had hidden the answer to his magic number trick in ‘Free Kick', a little jump-start stage to a nearby cache he called 'Root For The Team' that he had placed there nearby to the soccer fields.

Mitch told the team that they would have to figure out the coordinates to the cache using digital roots, which is the basis of the magic number trick he showed them.

He gave them the numbers below, explaining that each number had been derived like his example from the day before by taking a number from the charity tallies, scrambling the number, subtracting the second number from the first number to get the magic number and then secretly removing one digit from the magic number.

So the challenge was to figure out what digit Mitch had removed from the magic numbers to get the numbers they were given below.

Mitch let them know that each removed digit was a part of the missing minutes to the cache.

He was kind enough to give the team the 4 from the example from the day before for the first missing part in the latitude decimal minutes. Also, he gave them the 9 in the first part of the longitude decimal minutes because 9 is a key number used in the magic number trick.

So, he said, the first thing you have to do, if you haven't caught onto the trick, is scope out the "Free Kick" clue for this cache!

A=missing digit to 392      B=missing digit to 987      C=missing digit to 706      D=missing digit to 492

N 39° 40.4AB      W 078° 55.9CD
