This cache, our first, is located at a picturesque cemetery atop a small hill. This area was a busy goldfield in the 1850’s (plenty of info about this era at a nearby cache ‘pinkey point’).
Sergeant John McNally was the first member of the Victoria Police Force (formed in 1853) to be murdered whilst on duty. He was shot by the escapee ‘Gipsy Smith’ whilst attempting to arrest him at the Cathcart goldfields in the 1850’s.
Interestingly, although McNally is given the title of the first VPF member murdered, eight others died before him by either drowning (4) or horse accidents (3). The other one accidently shot himself.
The nearby Ararat Hospital Emergency Department and Helicopter Landing are named in honour of Sgt John McNally, as is the hill near the Cathcart Cemetery.
You can park at S37 19.358 E142 53.447, and enjoy the 300m walk from there (or drive all the way if you wish). Please close the gate.
The listed coordinates will place you at a memorial to Sgt John McNally.
