Μια σχετικά σύντομη διαδρομή στον Φραγκομαχαλά, που δείχνει μερικά από τα λιγότερο γνωστά και τυπικά μνημεία της Θεσσαλονίκης.

Ως Φραγκομαχαλάς χαρακτηρίζεται το τμήμα της πόλης ανάμεσα στις οδούς Αριστοτέλη Βαλαωρίτου, Ελευθέριου Βενιζέλου, Λέοντος Σοφού και της
περιοχής των Λαδάδικων. Πήρε το όνομά του λόγω των Γάλλων και άλλων δυτικοευρωπαίων που εγκαταστάθηκαν εκεί.

Κατά την Οθωμανική περίοδο της Θεσσαλονίκης δημιουργήθηκε αρχικά σε αυτήν την περιοχή το πρώτο γαλλικό προξενείο (1685), αργότερα δίπλα του χτίστηκε και η καθολική εκκλησία του Αγίου Λουδοβίκου (1742 ή 1744). Πέρα από τους Γάλλους, πρόξενοι, αντιπρόσωποι και έμποροι από διάφορες άλλες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες συγκεντρώθηκαν σε αυτήν την περιοχή δημιουργώντας τις οικίες τους, εμπορικά καταστήματα και εκπαιδευτήρια. Έτσι στην περιοχή διαμορφώθηκε ένα ιδιαίτερα ευρωπαϊκό πρόσωπο από αρχιτεκτονικής, εμπορικής και πολιτιστικής άποψης.

Σήμερα η περιοχή δυστυχώς δεν έχει πλέον την αίγλη που είχε κάποτε. Ο εμπορικός χαρακτήρας της, κρίνοντας από τα διάφορα καταστήματα στα στενά της, έχει παραμείνει ως έναν βαθμό παρατηρείται όμως μια αλλαγή του χαρακτήρα της περιοχής με το άνοιγμα αρκετών καφέ, μπυραριών και ταβερνών. Ανάμεσα στα παλιά αρχοντικά και τα μέγαρα έχουν ανεγερθεί αρκετές οικοδομές και τα λιγοστά που παραμένουν τις περισσότερες φορές έχουν αφεθεί δυστυχώς στην μοίρα τους...

Οδός Πάικου
Μια πολύ μικρή και στενή οδός. Σε αυτήν βρίσκεται ένα κτίριο πάνω από την είσοδο του οποίου είναι γραμμένο με αραβική γραφή το «isameel otmani», μάλλον το όνομα του ιδιοκτήτη.

Δεξιά από την είσοδο είναι ένας μηχανισμός με διάφορα νούμερα πάνω του, (182 / XY ). Το A = X + Y

Στοά Μαλακοπής
Χτίστηκε το 1906 στο τμήμα όπου βρισκόταν ο κήπος του μεγάρου του Ενδουάρδου Αλατίνι, της γνωστής εβραϊκής οικογένειας εμπόρων, για να στεγάσει καταστήματα και την Τράπεζα της Θεσσαλονίκης (Banque de Salonique). Αρχιτέκτονας της στοάς είναι ο Ιταλός Βιταλιάνο Ποζέλι. Η στοά γλίτωσε από την μεγάλη πυρκαγιά του 1917. Το 1940 η τράπεζα έκλεισε λόγω επίταξης από τους Ναζί. Το ρολόι στο μπροστινό μέρος της στοάς σταμάτησε να λειτουργεί την ώρα του μεγάλου σεισμού της Θεσσαλονίκης το 1978.

Στην ανατολική πλευρά υπάρχει μια ημερομηνία, ποιο είναι το τελευταίο ψηφίο; + 1 = E

Χανί Εμνιγέτ
Χτίστηκε κατά το 1890 και λειτουργούσε αρχικά ως ξενοδοχείο / ξενώνας. Ως το 1914 στέγαζε το βιομηχανικό επιμελητήριο της Θεσσαλονίκης. Σήμερα δυστυχώς παραμένει εγκαταλελειμμένο.

Απέναντι από χάνι βρίσκεται η είσοδος μια πολυκατοικίας με την διεύθυνση «ΕΔΕΣΣΗΣ X». Το X = B

Κρατικό Ωδείο
Χτίστηκε το 1904 επίσης από τον Βιταλιάνο Ποζέλι για την Οθωμανική Τράπεζα. Από το 1987 και έπειτα στο κτήριο στεγάζεται το Κρατικό Ωδείο Θεσσαλονίκης. Στην δεξιά γωνία του οικοπέδου του κτηρίου βρίσκεται συνήθως ένας μυστηριώδης άνδρας που καλλιεργεί φυτά σε γλάστρες... Δεν ξέρω γιατί βρίσκεται πάντα εκεί και αν πουλάει τα φυτά ή υπάρχει κάποιος άλλος λόγος.

Αριστερά από την είσοδο υπάρχει ένας διψήφιος αριθμός, (XY). Το F = X + Y + 3

A short run through "Frankomahalas" (French / Frankish quarter) presenting some of the less known monuments of Thessaloniki.

"Frankomahalas", meaning French or Frankish quarter is the part of the city among the streets of A. Valaoritou, E. Venizelou, L. Sofou and the Ladadika quarter. It was named like that due to the French and other (European) representatives, ambassadors and merchants that lived and worked there during the Ottoman period of the city.

The first to settle in this quarter where the French, creating the first French consulate in the year 1685. Later in the year 1742 or 1744 the first Catholic church of St. Ludwig was also build. Following the French, other merchants, ambassadors etc. from other countries gathered in the area giving it a really lively and European flair.

Today this quarter isn't as nice and bright as it used to be. The commercial character still remains in a kind of way, but not to the degree it used to be. Sadly many of the buildings that where originally build there during the golden years of the quarter either stay deserted or got/get demolished in order to build new ones.

Paikou Street
A really small and narrow street. On this street you can find a mansion, "isameel otmani" is written in the Arabic script on the entrance of the mansion, probably the name of the owner.

On the right of the entrance, there is an electric mechanism with some digits on it, (182 / XY). A = X + Y

Malakopi Arcades
The Arcades were build in 1906 on the same spot where the garden of Enduard Alatinis's Mansion (well known Jewish family of merchants of Thessaloniki) was located. The Arcade was build by the Italian architect, Vitaliano Pozeli, in order to house the Bank of Thessaloniki (Banque de Salonique). It was spared of destruction at the great fire of 1917. In 1940 the bank closed business due to requisition by the Nazis. The clock in the frond side of the arcades stopped functioning at the time of the great earthquake of Thessaloniki, in 1978

On the east side of the arcades, there is a year curved on the wall. Which is the last digit of that year? + 1 = E

Emniyet Hani
It was build in the 1890 and was used as an inn originally. Later it housed the chamber of commerce and industry of Thessaloniki, till the year 1914. Today it stays deserted.

On the opposite side of the street, there is an entrance of a building. The Address written on the entrance is "ΕΔΕΣΣΗΣ X". X = B

State Conservatoire of Thessaloniki
It was build in 1904, also by Vitaliano Pozeli for the Ottoman Imperial Bank. From the year 1987, till nowadays the State Conservatoire of Thessaloniki is housed in it. Outside the right corner of the garden, there is always a mysterious man, who grows small plants in pots. No clue why he is always there...

At the left of the entrance there is a two digit number, (XY). F = X + Y + 3
