Geocache Description:

This multi-waypoint cache will take you to three (or maybe four) locations in Kelowna.

While this cache is intended to be completed in the field, you may need to do some of the calculations on a computer if your GPS is not equipped to do proximity circles and projections.

There is no third-party "geochecker" for this cache. It is intended to be completed on your GPS, in the field.

Make sure you have a printed or paperless version of the cache page with you when you visit the waypoints, so you know exactly what to do. Send me a message if you get stuck!

Most geocachers around Ottawa are familiar with a cacher named "binthair" who designed a number of unique and challenging geocaches in the earlier days of the sport. Though binthair has moved on to other things, many of his caches are maintained by the local community so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

As a tribute to binthair and a thank-you to Kelowna's geocachers, I've designed this multi-waypoint cache to give you a taste of binthair.

Instructions to find the cache:

There are several steps, including some math in the field. Make sure you keep good notes! Email me if you get stuck, or if you're unsure how to do one of the steps.

The geocache is located where two circles meet. To find out where that is, you'll need to visit the centre points of each circle and do some calculations.

The centre of the first circle is at the posted coordinates. Call this Waypoint 1. Go to Waypoint 1, where you will find a monument with two years written on it. Write down the first year.

Now for some math in the field!

To find the radius of the first circle, SUBTRACT the first year on the monument from 4528. The difference is equal to the radius of the first circle, in metres.

Waypoint 2 (the centre point of the second circle) is at a bearing of 245 degrees (relative to true north) from Waypoint 1.

To find the distance from Waypoint 1 to Waypoint 2 , ADD the first year from the monument to 903. This will give you the distance in metres.

Go to Waypoint 2. You should be able to drive or bike right up to it. Remember, Waypoint 2 is the centre of the second circle. At Waypoint 2, you will find a sign with squares on it.

Now for some more math in the field!

To find the radius of the second circle, you need to count the number of squares *of all sizes* on the sign. Multiply this number by 10, then subtract 1243. The result will be the radius of the second circle in metres.

Now you know the coordinates for the centre of each circle, and the radius of each circle.

The cache is located at a point where these circles meet. You'll find that they meet in two places. If you go to the wrong place, you won't find much more than concrete. *Your projection for Waypoint 2 may be a few metres off. To ensure better accuracy for the final, mark the actual coordinates of the sign and use them to calculate the circle.

There's a $5 Canadian Tire gift certificate for the FTF, and a few other swag items in the cache.
