BACKGROUND
The University of Wisconsin -- Waukesha has a field station 10
miles west of the campus. This was a farm donated to the school in
the 70's that is being returned to its natural state. It is a
beautiful 100+ acres that is crossed by the Ice Age National Scenic
Trail, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, Scuppernong Creek, has lake
frontage and 8 different natural communities.
The station has been maintained for almost 40 years by a single
coordinator, Marlin Johnson, who lives on the site. Annually he
needs volunteers for prairie burns, brush removal and seed
collection.
We all do not want to see geocachers with axes or blow torches
so it was suggested that the call be put out for seed pickers. The
picked seeks will be used to restore farm fields to prairie.
THE EVENT
12 September 2009 1:00-4:00pm
This is an event where volunteers (that's you) would arrive,
help with the picking and as thanks be provided with the basics for
an a potluck campfire meal.
We will be walking through tall grass prairie picking seeds.
You are required to bring nothing except potluck food and/or
drink.
Children are welcome.
Dogs are welcome.
Marlin has scheduled this picking as an exclusively geocacher
event.
Please indicate your intention to help out so that I have
sufficient marshmallows (among other things).
Details (added 9-6)
Access: Access to the station is via a well hidden gravel
road that runs east from Waterville Road. The coordinates take you
the parking lot where we will gather. If you come late, walk east
along the trail up the hill to the farm house.
Pot Luck: I will have plastic plates, napkins, utensils,
cups and a cooler full of soft drinks for use throughout the day.
Around the bonfire I will have chocolate and marshmallows and
g-grackers. Please bring munchies or salads or cookies or snacks to
share. If you would like to bring wine or beer please do. Bring
your favorite obscure beer if you like.
