Geocache Description:

Take a journey through Clear Creek State Park! Gather the clues along the way for the ammo box's final location along Olean Split Road (final location is outside of the park). AGT-Jefferson stamp #16.

This cache is part of the ten-county Allegheny GeoTrail project. It contains a special stamp to be used in your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to obtain before setting out to find the cache. Please do not remove the stamp! Get your passport stamped at 6 or more AGT caches within a county, and get a FREE geocoin representing that county. There are ten different coins to collect, plus a bonus 11th coin if you get all 10 counties. Visit www.alleghenygeotrail.com for more information!

The coordinates provided on this page will take you to the Clear Creek State Park office. In order to find the final stage (ammo box) of this geocache, you will need to travel (by car, bike, or hike) to a few places within the park. Stop by the park office and get yourself a park map, it will come in handy (or download one from their web site: Clear Creek State Park).

The final location is not within the state park but near the end of Olean Split Road (see waypoints for the parking area).
You will be looking for clues to help you determine the coordinates for the final stage. These clues are pretty easy to find, so don’t sweat it!

First, park at the beach and walk down to the spillway. Take a dip, or bring your fishing rod. This spillway was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (along with the cabins, roads, trails, etc. within the park). Since the bridge is under repair and cannot be crossed, walk around the reservoir trail (counterclockwise) until you are at the spillway. Look for the CCC emblem etched in the rock. The coordinates for this are: 41 19.386 N, 79 04.7892 W. You will need to find:

A) The CCC camp number. S-_ _
B) The year the dam was built. 1_ _ _

Put them in order here: _ _ . _ _ _

Next, go to the Nature-Lumbering Museum across from the Ox Shoe trailhead (41 19.914 N, 79 05.924 W). Enjoy the museum and its indoor and outdoor exhibits. Here, you will need to find:

C) The number on the little metal placard above the main entrance door to the museum. Put them in order here: _ _ . _ _ _

You now have enough information to determine the coordinates for the final stage. Travel back out of the park and turn left on SR-949. Near the top of the hill, turn left on Olean Split road to travel to the parking area along the gas line.

How to determine the coordinates for the final stage:

Using the five numbers you got for A and B above in sequence, subtract 32.948. These will be the values for 41 _ _ . _ _ _ N.

Using the five numbers you got for C above in sequence, subtract them from 24.702. This will be the values for 79 _ _ . _ _ _ W.

Your answer should put you about 0.2 mile from the final location once you are at the parking area along the gas line that crosses Olean Split Road. Travel along the gas line and enjoy the great view. There is no need to overturn rocks, remove moss, etc. The ammo box is an easy find, so please tread lightly at the site, and re-hide as you find it! Good hunting!

Be aware that if Clear Creek State Park has to close for any reason, this cache will be disabled until the park reopens. Hunting is permitted on State Forest lands, so be sure to wear plenty of orange during hunting season. Visit the PA DCNR website for more information on Clear Creek State Park, hunting schedules and state forest regulations.
