Geocache Description:

Brooklyn is famous for many things: the old Brooklyn Dodgers, Coney Island and the place where the Tree grew. These days Brooklyn is also famous for its bands of wild parrots who build nests in strange places and squawk all day long.

I, like many others, thought this was an urban legend until the time I heard a parrot squawking outside and actually saw that it really was a parrot! There are all sorts of stories on how the parrots got here, but the one which is most widely accepted is that they managed to escape from a shipping crate at Kennedy Airport.

These parrots are Quaker Parrots or Monk Parakeets and they hail from Argentina which has a similar climate to our own. They are small green parrots with beige beaks and can be identified by their telltale screeching which they engage in all day long. They love to build nests around power transformers because they are high up and provide warmth in cold weather. This makes them the darlings of power company Con Edison who try to remove the nests and then end up with a public relations disaster, since everyone loves the parrots.

And these guys not only have their own web site: www.brooklynparrots.com, but also have their own song too! Check out the site for pictures, videos and information on parrot tours.

This cache is on a public street in full view of homes, so you must use full stealth techniques. It would be best to search during normal working hours when most people are out. If you search at other times, you will have curious residents wondering what you are doing in front of their homes.

2012 Update: Unfortunately, the parrots are gone. Apparently they moved to a higher priced condo out on the island... You can still see the parrots at Brooklyn College (Campus Rd & E 23 St) or at Greenwood Cemetery. The parrots have moved on, but we'll keep the cache here.

Bring a tweezers or needle nose pliers - the cache is often in a place which can be hard to reach. Long fingernails might help!
