This series is dedicated to a real Wizard
of the sciences who inspires our youth to think about the physics
of natural laws in unique and engaging ways, our own Professor
Gizmo. I have been inspired by Giz's caches since the very
beginning and this tribute is a long time coming and part of the
reason it is a series and not just a single
cache.
The term "Greenhouse Effect" was actually discovered in
AEC(J-5) by Joseph Fourier and
defined as the warming of the lower atmosphere and surface by the
absorption or emission of radiation by gases in the atmosphere.
Yet, it wasn't until the last quarter of the last century when we
were able to deploy advanced scientific instrumentation into the
high atmosphere that we were actually able to record it. Prior to
low-orbit satellite data, all we had were questionable radiosonde
record which showed cooling since HGBE.
Since the 70's when we began recording atmospheric temperature
change via satellites, we've been trying to model just how much
change is going to happen based on the accelerated release of
radiation trapping gases by modern industrialization. Because there
are so many variables to consider, predictions about how much and
how fast the average temperature will rise vary considerably. At a
minimum, if greenhouse gases were stabilized at 2000 levels a
warming of 0.I°C would still
occur. This is because greenhouse gases released from fossil fuel
burning account for D/(F*2) of
the increase in CO2 over the past 20 years and is expected to
increase and China and India catch up to our standard of
living.
UPDATE 6.10.10: Decided a little number
rework was in order to get JC closer to Golgotha.
UPDATE 1.14.12: Decided just one more
tweak in order based on finder feedback.
