This cache is part of a series intended to showcase Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads (W.R.R.). Wisconsin Legislature established the Rustic Roads program in 1973 to preserve what remains of Wisconsin's scenic, lightly traveled roads.
These caches are usually hidden in the right of way at a spot of notable beauty with no bushwhacking required. Please be respectful of private property, protected lands, and the overall history of the area. Take your time, mind your speed, and most of all… enjoy your journey along the road less traveled.
This particular cache is a matchstick container hidden along Rustic Road 57, a paved road running along the Waupaca and Portage County lines also known as South Foley & Town Line Roads. It begins at its intersection with U.S. Highway 10, passes through the community of Cobbtown and proceeds in a southernly direction until its intersection with State Highway 54. Total length is 4.1 miles.
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail follows this route and a log house used by hikers along the trail is located on the South Foley Road segment. The scenic beauty of R57 is enhanced by rolling hills along with an arch of trees over the road at two points. Deep ravines directly off the road are accented with ferns and a variety of wild flowers. Bluebirds and other wild birds are regular visitors to the large apple orchard along both sides of South Foley Road. The Waupaca River flows along side a portion of the road and the rapids can be heard at the Cobbtown Road bridge.
Some friendly tips: There are No Parking at Any Time signs all along this area, so you may need to park a bit down the road and walk. Also, my caches are usually always camo'd to fit in with the surroundings in some way, not with duct tape.
Please take care with retrieving and replacing the cache to save the experience for the next cacher. Happy hunting!
