Geocache Description:

Pioneer Cemetery
1876-1900

This small plot of land was provided by John Peterson to the Government Agent John Ussher who was murdered in 1879 by the McLean gang and buried there.. Since there were no deeds for the property this led to an argument causing Peterson himself to pay $8.00 for the burial of his wife in 1892,on the land he had donated to the Government. By 1897 the cemetery was crowded. Pre-existing family plots were used until 1901.

After some vandalization including the headstone of J. T. Ussher the headstones were moved to one corner of the small grass area. In 1949 the park was used for a baseball park. 1962 saw an order by the city to look after the site as a historical area.
