Geocache Description:

This is a replacement cache for “Twelve Creepy Grottos”. It is about a half mile walk to the cache. Coordinates for parking and the trail head (creepy gates) are listed below. Stay on the public trail until you get very near the cache. If you found the original you are still welcome to search for the new cache also. Please do NOT approach this cache through the cemetery!

Twelve is the incorrect number but I liked the original name so that why it’s still called “Twelve Creepy Grottos???”. How many grottos did you find on your walk? Not sure if you will see all of them but you will be in the midst of a bunch of them. They have been here for years but are unused by my “brothers” now because they are lacking some of the usual amenities due to vandalism. Don’t go at night…the place on top of the hill closes at dusk. (Thank goodness!)

Not to scare anyone away but there are numerous stories of paranormal activity in the nearby cemeteries. Many apparitions have been spotted throughout the cemeteries, as well as the occurrence of glowing green stones. These are attributed to the fact that many satanic rituals were supposed to have occurred nearby, specifically at the grottos which were perfect for concealing oneself when performing these unholy ceremonies, and it is thought that the apparitions one finds at nearby cemeteries are those raised by the satanic rituals.

From Riverside Cemetery is the story of Kate Blood, (There is another path just northeast from the trailhead that heads north to her grave (N44 16.033 W88 22.912) and another puzzle cache!) who died in the 19th century and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. It is said that Mrs. Blood murdered her husband and children, and as a result was buried away from the rest of the graves, tucked away in a little corner near the river. In fact, it's unlikely you would ever find Kate Blood's grave unless you were looking for it. Supposedly, if you go to her grave at night it's possible that you will see blood oozing from her gravestone, though if you touch the blood you'll find that it is dry like chalk. Some additionsl information from someone affiliated with the cemetery. Thanks for the comments. I believe it was in the 50’s that the Grotto area was designed by my grandfather Frank B.. Groh as he was in charge of the cemetery from 1926 – 1957. The design was reflecting a grotto area that he had seen in Germany. The stone work was done to enshrine statues that depicted the stations of the cross. In the late 60’s and early 70’s vandals began breaking off the heads of the statues. I believe it was after the third time of the heads being broken the cemetery said they could not afford to continue repairs on the statues. The statues were removed and the grottos were left standing. It was a beautiful area as it was all grass and flowers." I hope this answers some question about this area.
