Geocache Description:

A quick micro find at the entrance to the park. Great for that Decatur County grab for your County Challenge cachers!

Sappa State Park was dedicated on September 1, 1939. Four-hundred and eighty three acres were purchased for $30,000. The Sappa Creek State Lake began construction on October 1, 1935 with the help of 200 CC men that were barracked in the area. The 460 foot dam was completed in May of 1938 by the WPA. The Secretary of War, Harry H. Woodring, was slated to speak at the dedication but due to the war in Europe he was unable to attend. In the 1950's, the lake became choked with silt and efforts to clean were unfruitful. In the late 1960's, the land was transferred to the City from the State Forestry Fish and Game Commission. On May 6, 1969, the land was leased to Cookson Hills, a boys' Christian home.

Congratulations to shirsch for the FTF!
