One of the greatest unsolved mysteries of American history is
the death of President Zachary Taylor, whose nickname was
“Old Rough and Ready.” He died on July 9, 1850, a few
days after attending an Independence Day party where he sampled
dozens of home-made dishes presented to him by well-wishers. Some
think it was the cucumbers. Others believed it was spoiled
cherries. Some people at the time believed that when cucumbers and
milk are combined, it creates a poison. My favorite theory is that
he drank ice-cold milk so quickly that it gave him a heart attack.
Assassination theories persisted for a century and a half. In 1991,
Taylor’s ancestors had his body exhumed and tested for
poison. The results were that the original prognosis was probably
correct, that he died of gastroenteritis.
