Back in the early 80’s Jackson County created a recreational trail system in this area for the many cross country skiers that use to visit the region. It was to be named the “Winkler Hills” cross country ski trails, after a local individual who use to have a small log cabin tucked up in the one of the many valleys of this area. No one seems to know where the cabin or its occupant ever went, but the name still lives on.
Since the 80’s, cross country skiing also has met a sharp decline and the trails here were left to go back to nature because of this. Today, the land is managed through forestry practices, which benefits hunting, outdoor enthusiasts and now the occasional Geocacher! As you visit the Winkler Hills caches, take in the fresh air and the scenery this area has to offer…
Note: Most all of the access roads in this area are not maintained very well in the winter. Please use discretion.
