Geocache Description:

This cache is a part of a series highlighting Winnebago County’s “Lost Civilizations”. It was formerly part of the The Quest for Lost Civilizations (GC22CJE) series, which has now been archived.

On many maps of the Town of Wolf River, you may find this portion of Poygan Lake (also previously known as Pewaugan Lake) labeled as Boom Bay. The name comes from the Wolf River Boom Company, which was established in 1857 where the Wolf River entered the lake. The “boom” company would gather logs coming down the river from northern logging camps and divided them into “cribs” by the company that had logged them. The “cribs” were later lashed together to make “fleets” that were towed through the lakes to larger cities such as Oshkosh, Neenah, or Menasha. To accommodate the housing needs of the workers, the company established community of Zoar (also occasionally known as Boom) on the nearby shores. At the height of the lumber years, it was estimated the population of the town exceeded 300 people. Most were loggers, but many other tool and woodworkers made this their residence to service the industry. A post office was established in this area and operated from 1898 to 1903.

When the Wisconsin lumber industry began to decline, the workers abandoned the town with the majority moving west to the lumber rich Northwest to seek new employment. Today, almost no signs of this “Boom” town exists; only a few residences, the Boom Bay Resort and Bar, and Boom Bay Park.

The cache is a pill bottle hidden in Boom Bay Park. Normal park hours are 7AM to sundown M-Th, 7AM to 10PM on Fri./Sat., and 7AM to 9PM on Sundays.
