The Grateful Dead

"There is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert, period!"

The Grateful Dead were, are, and always will be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. There has been so much written about them, so many books, so many articles, that anything here would just be rehashing what has already been hashed before. Their music transcended every genre, from classical to country to rock to blues, they played it, they wrote it, they lived it. They are a culture unto themselves with a fan base of Deadheads that stretch from judges to doctors, from lawyers to criminals, from students to teachers, from atheletes to armchair quarterbacks. It seems that for years it just wasn't summer if the Dead weren't touring somewhere, selling out everywhere, and parking lots were full of people holding up a finger or two, asking for a miracle.

The Grateful Dead played in many places, but always had special ties to Oregon, from the early days with the kool aid acid tests, to their relationship with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. They always played somewhere in Oregon when there were in the northwest. I've decided to supplement the recent series of Grateful Dead geocaches in our area with a few of my own. What I want to do to set mine apart is to tie them into locations where the band played in the local area, and what they played. I think there will be surprises at just how many different venues they played in the Portland metro area (and if you're a Deadhead, you'll already know what they are, and will know where to start your searches).

This next cache in my Grateful Dead series is one that I remember with great fondness. In all the years that I listened to them, and followed their career, I was only able to catch the Grateful Dead live only once. But it was a special show, at an historic location, and is one show that many Deadheads consider somewhat mystical. The date is June 12, 1980, and the referenced link above will give the relevant details of the show. I just remember it was almost as much fun watching the crowd as it was the band. They opened with their current hit song "Alabama Getaway", went into Chuck Berry's "Promised Land" and so on. What stood out as unusual is that they opened the second set with their "Drums" interlude, something is usually featured mid-set with "Space". But the mystical powers must have been flowing that night because when the band went into "Fire On The Mountain", the mountain just north of Portland that had blown it's top a few months earlier, had a sizemic event that night, just as they were playing that song. The winds were just right, and as people left the show, they were greeted with a light dusting of volcanic ash. Most true Deadheads truly believe the band caused the mountain to erupt that night. Who knows? But it was a magic night, none the less.

The cache at this location is one that all cachers are familiar with, in location that all cachers are familiar with. Extreme stealth is required to obtain this one during the day, or depending on what activities are going on in the vicinity. Available 24/7, and is not wheelchair/stroller accessible. Parking is limited here, but can be found a short distance away, and is within easy walking distance. Parking and stealth are the reason I give it a 2 for overall difficulty.

Congratulations to twoez for the First To Find!!
