Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the “DCNR - Legacy of Conservation” Geocaching Trail (see “Related Web Page” link above). Collect all the Pennsylvania Legacy of Conservation cards – one from each of the 30 caches in the trail – and show them all at one of the validation centers to receive a Legacy of Conservation geocoin (non-trackable). This geotrail will be archived on June 30, 2013.

Hyner View State Park features a scenic vista overlooking the West Branch of the Susquehanna River and is a favorite spot for hang gliding. This is one of the nicest scenic vistas in Pennsylvania state parks. You can see for miles to the west and to the south over the river and surrounding mountains. The focal point of Hyner View State Park is the overlook wall, constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1949, the present park access road was built providing better access to the view. Okay, on to the cache: You should find yourself standing in a large keystone. Notice that there are 20 numbered stones around you (one for each forest district) – you will be using these numbers to alter the stage 1 coordinates (here) to the stage 2 coordinates (final cache site). Addition and subtraction skills will be necessary. Latitude: You will notice that one of the flagstone pavers under your feet is arrowhead-shaped and points to one of the numbered stones on your left. Use this number twice to get a double-digit number. Add the double-digit number to the decimal degrees (.mmm) of the stage 1 latitude: N 41 19.579 This will give you the latitude for the final stage. Longitude: You will notice that one of the numbered stones on your right has a routered (trimmed edge) top. Use this number (two-digit) as the first two numbers of a three-digit number. The third number of the three-digit number is the numbered rock to the right of the Pink-Striped Rock (Green, Pink-Striped, your # rock) on your left. Subtract this three-digit number from the last three numbers (.mmm) of the stage 1 longitude: W 77 37.461 This will give you the longitude for the final stage. It’s not far. Walk the right fork and then turn left when perpendicular to the site to protect the natural resources (plants) and not leave a trail. One of 30 geocaches on the Legacy of Conservation trail.
