Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the “DCNR - Legacy of Conservation” Geocaching Trail (see “Related Web Page” link above). Collect all the Pennsylvania Legacy of Conservation cards – one from each of the 30 caches in the trail – and show them all at one of the validation centers to receive a Legacy of Conservation geocoin (non-trackable). This geotrail will be archived on June 30, 2013.

The following is taken from Henry W. Shoemaker’s “Extinct Pennsylvania Animals – Book 1” published in 1917: Panthers insisted in returning to spots where they had reared their young the season before. The hunters were soon aware of the panther “ledges” or “clefts” and robbed them annually. William Perry killed a mature male panther on Yost Run in 1875, the animal’s head covered with old scars, showing where it had been in sanguinary battles with rivals in the past. “Painter” is another name for panther, or mountain lion, the woods having fairly “teemed with them” two centuries ago. Looking around near the cache site, it is not too difficult to imagine that two centuries wasn’t all that long ago … Round trip hike is over six miles - be forewarned. Cache is accessed directly from trail - no need to bushwhack.
