Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the “DCNR - Legacy of Conservation” Geocaching Trail (see “Related Web Page” link above). Collect all the Pennsylvania Legacy of Conservation cards – one from each of the 30 caches in the trail – and show them all at one of the validation centers to receive a Legacy of Conservation geocoin (non-trackable). This geotrail will be archived on June 30, 2013.

The 329-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park is in McKean County and features remnants of the 2,053-foot railroad bridge (viaduct) that was a National Engineering Landmark. A tornado has knocked down much of the bridge. When built in 1882, Kinzua Viaduct was the highest railroad bridge in the world. It was constructed as an alternative to laying an additional eight miles of track over rough terrain along the line leading to McKean County’s coal, timber and oil lands. Due to the stabilization and construction on the six southern towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, part of the main park area, including the main parking area of the Kinzua Bridge State Park will be closed from September, 16, 2009 until mid-summer 2010. Regardless of the construction, the overflow parking lot, eastern picnic area, and the overlook will be open to the public from sunrise to sunset daily; however, there will be no winter maintenance. Okay, on to the cache: The General Kane Trail will lead you to the cache – you can access the cache directly from the trail. Practice good caching techniques and don’t leave any trace of your hunt for the next geocacher.
